ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.

(Per L'xitkd Press Association.) WELLINGTON, February 24. Mr J. Wakelin, sawmiller, of 'taihapo, was seriously injured in Wellington tonight through alighting backwards from a. iramcar. His skull was smashed, ami lie is now in tho hospital in a serious condition. Mr Wakelin was on his way to Christchureh, where his wife is paving a visit. An inquest was hold to-day on the body of William Henry Massey, who was killed at l'encarrow epiarry by a fall of earth caused by an explosion of gunpowder. Evidence was given that the deceased was a recent arrival from England, and an electrician hy trade. Contrary to instruction, he was testing a. wire in a drive when the charge, which had previously failed, exploded, and deceased was buried beneath about MOO tons of earth. A verdict was returned that death was caused by a fall of rock, due to a sudden explosion while deceased was testing electric wires, no blame being attachable to anybody. • J lIOKITIKA, February 24. A Chinese miner named Young Ilee, whilst working in his claim at, Blue Spur, sustained a. compound fracture of both legs, caused by a fall of earth. The condition of tho man is considered hopeless]

Some four or five days ago a man named John Delaney, who has been working on a farm near Kaitangata., went into the township in the evening, and after spending some time there sot out for home, at Mr T. S. Reavo's farm, Rivevsdale. He did not arrive, however, and Iho matter was reported to tho police, withe the result that a search was made, and Delaney's tody was found in the Molvnoux River yesterday. An inquest will be held. Caroline Thomson, aged 58. was found dead in bed at her house at St. Leonards by a neighbour yesterday morning. Deceased's husband is in tho Hospital, and she has been' living alone for some time. An inquest will bo held at the Morgue to-day.
