THE STRANDED HAWEA.

FUTILE SALVAGE EFFORTS, (Fbom Oub/Own Cokrkspondekt.) GREYMOUTH, November ?5. Shipping circles were early astir this momint; in anticipation of the attempt to ho made to tow tho stranded Hawea off. About 7.30 the steamer Ivittawa and 1 the tugs Terawhiti and Westhnd proceeded down stream, the former being anchored in midstream, with tho -two tugs near by! There was too much swell on the bar lb allow the Terawhiti to go alongside the stranded vessel, so the pumps' Tigged up on the Hawea, bad to be utilised. These succeeded in omptying the after hold. It was soon, found thai the Kit.t,wa was too ■lengthy and not suitable for the. work, so she was ordered back to the wharf. The two tugs were then connected by stout hawsers with the okawkl ■ vtwel, but after pnllinß bad been continued for sometime the effort was-found k> too abortive, and at 11 ft.m. the tisgs returned to mhe wharf. It is understood that further timber will be taken out of the Hawea. It is quite possible that another attempt will be made -to refloat the vessel to-night. Should this not take place, then another attempt will be made for certain tomorrow morning, in which' case it is hoped that the sea will be sufficiently smooth to allow the Terawhiti to j-o alongside. In this event the chances' of success would ho much brighter. Several hundred people assembled on the .tip heads this morning, to watch prc*ee<}ings, '•• "-• *•"•'
