FIRST GRADE. Otago v. U.\'iYF.itsm\ This game was played' at Forbury on the Olago Oltib'e ground, whioh was in fair order. From the bully-oif Otago csune away with a strong, rush, whjch was stopped by Johnson, who 'returned the ball to his forwards, imd thov set out for Oiago goal. The play for ii while moved up and down the tiokl rapidly, neither side gaining any advantage. However, ihe University forwards soon broke away, ruid on reaching the circle three of the forwards patted l the bull in turn, with the result that it rolled over the lino, between the posts. Rutherford 1 was tho last to touch, and claimed the honour of scoring fust goal. From the buhy Otago kept the University hacks liusjly defending. The defence proved sound until a long drive from Jarman 6aw Healy (tho University's goalkeeper) make an infringement, the result of a speculator. University, by careful play, were able to clear their- goal from the bully, and carried play up the field, when Cuttle put in a hot shot which struck Otago's. goalkeeper and rebounded over the bar. From another forward rush Cuttle ecored. The spell soon after closed with tho store at 2 goals to nil in favour of University. In the 6ccond ape! l , which was of much the same character as tho first, Johnson and Rutherford scored. The prettiest piece of play of the afternoon was when Thomson, at centre half for University, »t tho ball to M'adlll on the right wing. He sped down the lino ami then ccntred beautifully with a hard, | clean drive. Rutherford was in waiting, j and made no mistake with his shot The game ended University 6 goals, Otago nil. Tho result of this match loaves University with an unchallenged lead for,this year's premiership. Mr Hellyer made an efficient referee. The matoh Dunodin v. Y.M.C.A. went to the former by default, Y.M.C.A. being unable to put a team in the field. JUNIOR GRADE. Dunedin beat University bj- 4 goals to 3 after a very evenl.v contested game. The Auckland-.vlanawatu hockey shield match, played at Remuera to-daj before 200(1 people, resulted in a win for Auckland by \ goals to 3. 'lire weather was perfect and tho ground in splendid order. Tho Manawatu team had to be altered at the last moment owing to'one of the members sustaining a poisoned hand, and the combination was thus upset. Auckland secured a lead early in the game, Brooke-Smith scoring from a corner. Shortly after Webb, for Manawatu, equalised matters, ending a fine run down tho left wing; with a goal. Before the first spell ended Mason scored another goal for Auckland. The second half had not long commenced when Youn" further increased Auckland's lead, Manawatu then commenced a 6trong attack, which resulted in R. Fraser finding tho net almost immediately afterwards. Barry notched Auckland s fourth goal. Manawatu then made strenuous efforts to score. K. Eraser again found the net. With a few minutes to go, and Manawatu on the attack, play became very' exciting; but defence was too sound. Sherriffs, Auckland's skipper, at right, full back, played a magnificent game, bis defence proving Manamtu's undoing. Kelson play Auckland for the shield on ..Saturday next.
