AMATEUR ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION.
OTAGO CENTRE.
A special meeting of tho above association was held at the secretary's office last night for tho purpose of considering protests from the Port Chalmers and Dunedin Harriers against a resolution arrived at fixing tho date for holding two 'inter-club races on Labour Day. Mr A. Marryatt (president) occupied the chair. Correspondence was read from the Congregational, Southern Biblo Class, and Oaversham' Harrier Clubs also objecting to the date fixed. The St. Andrew Harriers wrote favouring the Labour Day fixture, as it would be impossible for their club to be fully represented on the day suggested by the Dunedin Harriers, as so many of their members were engaged in retail houses.
A letter was read from Mr Donald Melville apologising for his absence in consequence of having met with an accident.— The apology was accepted, and regret expressed at tho cause of absence. Some discussion took place as to wifther the meeting could legally consider the protcete; lodged.
The Chairman remarked that it was absolutely necessary for the good government of the association that after a resolution had been passed with due deliberation it should stand for a little while at least. It they came to hasty decisione aud rescinded , their resolutions immediately they wcro passed there would be no finality at all
Mr A. Melville, on behalf of Mr D. Melville, moved—"That the resolution fixing Labour Day for holding the cross-country championship race and interprovincial club and inter-club teams race bo rescinded, and that the inter-club race take place on 2tth August."—Seconded by Mr L. Sanderson.
The Chairman ruled that the motion woe out of order, and could not be discussed. A notice of motion in the same terms was tabled, tho saino to bo considered at a special meeting to bo held on tho 26th inst.
