On -Monday, April 23, a large number of lieiglibour.i mid friends assembled at l'log Swamp to bid good-bye to Mr and Mrs Thomas Dempster oil tlio eve of tbeir departure (or Southland. The gathering was held in the ham, which was specially arranged for occasion, and, on behalf of those assfinhled, Mr Napier presented Mr Dempster with a gold albert and locket, and to Mrs Dempster a silver loapoV, suitably inscribed. In a few well-choFon remarks Mr Napiei wished the departing ones Godspeed, long life, and prosperity in their new home. Messrs Souter, M'Gregor, Nelson, Maxwell, and Jefferis also spoke of -the good qualities of Mr and Mrs Dempster. After Mi' Dempster had feelingly returned thanks on behalf of his wife and himself, the company joined in singing " For lie's a jolty good fellow." During the evening pongs were given by Mrs Souter, Mrs Cmnberbeach. Misses Thompson, Stringer, and Napier, and Messrs Hsllani, Nelson. M'Gregor, and M ! 'Tunmey. Piano solos were also played by Misses Napier. Kalinin, and Gilmore. tho piano being kindly lent l)y Mrs Scott. Dancing followed, and the company separated at an early hour next morning after having spent a very enjoyablo time. The following is the result of the shooting competition at the Farmers' Union picnic held at. Waikouaiti 011 the Ist Hay: — President's Team.
