PORT CHALMERS BOROUGH COUNCIL.

Tho fortnightly' meeting of the Port Chalmers Borough Council waa hold last evening, and was attended by the Mayor (Mr Isaao Stevenson), and Ors Onble, Moigtsn, Weir, Fail, Edgar, Mawson, Powell, and M'Donald. An apology was tendered for Cr Knewstubb's abs«icc. On tairing the chair, tho Mayor welcomed tho ncwlv-oleoicd councillors, and also those who had" been returned unopposed, and thanked (he members o-f the various camnuttcc3 for their valuable services during tho past year, complimenting them upon tho hainwnious manner in which they had performed their duties. CORRESPOXnEKCE. The Secrota.ry of the Charitable Aid Board forwardfd a list of persons -within the borough in receipt of charitable aid (two families), and it was further reported thai the trustees had granted 5s per week to another case as recommended by the council. 'f. P. Martin, secretary of tie Municipal Association, forwarded a copy of legal opinion r.i milk clearing houses, stating that the regulations governing tho same would acquire the force of a statute.

Mrs il. Ritchie wrote requesting the council to reconsider a previously declined request for permission to erect a small addition in roar of buildings facing 'Mount and G-ecrge sfreoU, pointing out that clause 45 of the by-laws provided for contingencies like the one under notice.—The matter was referred to the Bylaws Committee for report.

The District Railway Engineer wrote stating that the drainage from the railway land at Bay was merely surfac© water and quite innocuous. As tho drain in question was merely for tho benefit of ratepayers, it was considered that tho council should carry any extension from the outlet which was con* piderod necessary.—Referred to Works Committee for report. reports. The finance report showed that the total receipts sinos last meeting amounted to £79 2s 7d, and accounts amounting to £133 16s 34 were presented for payment. Coupons amounting to £40 15s on account of waterworks loan aocount lmd been paid by the bank since laflt meeting.—Adopted.

The Inspector reported that a portion of Harrington street was said to be m bad condition, and complaints were again made about tho manner in which carter's deposited rubbish at tho Mussel Bay tip. Tho inspector recommended that a gate be erected and a small charge ramie to cover the cost of spreading rubbish and looking after tho tip.—Consideration was deferred*

MAYOR'S HONORARIUM. The Mayor temporarily vacated the chair, which waa taken by Cr Edgar.—On the motion of Cr Tait, the Mayor's honorarium was fixed at £50 for the ensuing year.

ELECTION OF COMMITTEES. The foHowing committcce wwe olected for tho ensuing term:—Finance, Reserves, and Cemetery—Crs Tait, Maweon, and Knewstubb; "Works, Firo Brigade, Lighting, and Sanitary— Cm Edgax, F'ail, Pbwcll, and McDonald; Water. Baths, and By-laws—Crs Weir, Cable, aui Morgan. GEKERAL. Tenders were received for tho erection of fencing at the reservoir, and were referred to tho Water Committee for report. Tho Mayor drew attention to the wide district which had to be looked after by tho local police staff under Sergeant Mullany. and Baid he thought that the matter should bo brought under tho notice of the authorities, with a view of pelting an additional constable appointed.—The town clerk was directed to write to tho inspector, drawing his attention to tho mailer. Crs Morgan and M'DonaM .vcro appointed to represent the counoil on the new Band Committee. NOTICES OP MOTION. Cr Weir gave notice to move that a committee bo set up to consider the question of lighting, and to obtain information re cost of electric lighting. Cr Powell to move that the inspector bo instructed to have the water trough removed from Mount street to the east side of Beach Dtreet, near the firebel).
