MINING.

There will l» no wash-up on the 01 ago Xo, 2 dredge this week.

The secretary of tbo Charlton Creek Gold Dredging Company reports a return ot 14oz for tho week.

The height of tho Molyncux River yesterday morning was 9ft above tho normal mark at Alexandra. Tho weather was rep;rtod to l» mild.

The roaster of tho Elcctric Xo. 2 dredge wired the secretary yesterday that there would be no wash-up this week.

Mr Edward Trythall. rceretarv of the Xew Plymouth Petroleum Company (Ltd.) reports receipt of a telegram from olio of the directors at tho claim stating that the manager started boring at 3 o'clock on Thursday afternoon, and at 11 o'clock on Friday morning he wa? down 105 ft. The actual working time was ax hours.

The actual thu? worked by the Sandy Point dredjo last week was 132 hours, the width of tho cut IGOyds, the average depth of the ground 26ft, the. distnnco worked ahead 7ft, and tho height of the face above water level 25ft. Tho ground on tho inside still remained poor. Tho I'-est of tho grour.d was about two chains from tho river, there being there a fair seam of gold close to the bottom.

Reporting for last week tho master of the t Now Trafalgar dredge stated that ho had a ' fair run of 129 hours. The dredgo was shifted to tho down stream section ot the cut on Wednesday. If dredging had been continued in tho uppor section tho return would havo been a fe-.v ounces better than it was, but the dredge had to be moved, having finisfcod there for tho timo b;ing. Tliero was not much differenco in tho quality of the wash, but the cut that was •taken up after Wednesday tos very rough, and it was impo6riblo to treat the sama amount of material there as in tie upper soction, the bottom requiring a good deal of cleaning. Hie rough bar t'ttat was encountered would not, it was thought, tad, vory long.

Tbo Transvaal gold output for February was 493,5420z. or d4,0360z below tho January figure. It is proportionately, however, of superior excellence, the daily average being X7,C*26os, as compared with 17,34.10z—an increaso of 2SSoz per diem. This, too, is without any allowance being made for tho occurrence of the Chinese now year, when tho coolks aro entitled to tliroo days' holiday. As compared with February of last year thero is an inorea-se of 85,8740z in tho tctaJ, while tho doily average is no less tbau 30G70z Ixfttor.

Tho mastor of iho Otago Company's No. 1 dredgo reports having had a good run lust week, but with tho ground r.ooror iu quality, The No. i dredgo started work on Iho 30Ui Uit.

Tho secretary of tho Muddy Creek Company reports a return of 71oz for 133 hours' work. TJiis includes 20oz, the result of four months' blowings.

Tho following items are from tlio Alexandra Herald:—Tho work of constructing the extension of the Bonanza race is almost completed, only ono portion of tho excavation requiring to bo finished. Tie pipes lor carrying th'o water across several email gullies liavo arrived, aud aro now being put into position. Tho whole work is oxpectcd to bo completed in a short time, and tho mauager considers that everything has been carried, out -sitisfaotorily. —Messrs Fink and parly, on the Mamihciikia, have tho erootion of thedr dredge almost oompletad. Boxes have been put on in p'.aoo of the screen and ether necessary alterations havo been effected. Tbo dredgo is cxpeetod to resimio operations in a week or so.—ilat-a-kanui: .Mining operations in this district, which aro solely confined to sluicing and elevating, have for Boma 'time past been somewhat retarded owing to on insufficient supply of water, a.ud even at present somo of the claims aro prevented from working owing to having 110 available water.—Tie Undaunted Company's claim still cofttinucj to yield good returns, but, tho water supply being inadequate, sluicing is not bein;? carried on as advantageously (19 tho manager would havo desired.—Tlio Mount Morgan claim is only working half time on account of tho shortago of witer, and the pipo lino is now being shifted in order that the pipes may command a more direct line to the wound—Tho Tinkers Company is confining sluicing operations to tho claim at Dr.vbread as the water supply is inadequate to allow tho claim at Matakawui being worked. With the snowfall that has taken place the supply should now increaso, and it is hoped that the company will bo able to get a, month or two's work at Matakanui before the hard frost sefa in.—All the smallor claims are either closed down or operations aro being carried on with difficulty, and the dry season has proved a very bad ono for most miners— Recently the miners of Matakmui received notice from tho Minister of Mines that their application for a tailings reserve of 3300 acres around nil the workings hero had been granted. Ever since 1903 the miners havo been advocating the granting of this reserve, and it is only now that their demand for same has borno fruit. It cannot bo denied thut the setting aside of a reserve for depositing toolings means the further encouragement ot mining in this district, and it is a mailer of congratulation to tho miners here that their request has been adhered to by the Mines Department.
