WELLINGTON, May 3. Tho Wellington Trades and Labour Council passed a resolution approving of tho action oi tho Minister of Labour in oompclling the observance of tho Saturday provision of the Factories Act, and reffrotting the fact that the provision had been allowed to lie dormant so long.
THAMES, May J. In connection with n, deputation to tho Hon. J. A. Millar regarding the enforcement of the Factories Act, which matter affected other parte of Now Zealand, Mr Mackay, dairy inspector of tho Department of Labour, wrote stating that, in the case of butchers employed at making email joods, the- wore more shop assistants than factory omployoes, and therefore not compelled to take tho Saturday holiday, but oould take tho day fixed upon locally as the half-holiday. The Minister promised to brine tho matter beforo Parliament, and endeavour to secure an amendment, so as to exempt small boroughs, where the conditions v.ere different, from the provisions of the act, which had special application to largo cities.
Mr J. E. Broad, chairman of tlio Goro Retailers' Association, has received a telegram from the Acting Primo Minister to the effect that the question of enforcing the Saturday half-holiday will be considered by Cabinet.
