THE EXHIBITION.

REMARKS BY MR C. LEWIS, M.11.R

(Per United Press Association.) CURISTCHURCH, May 3. Mr C*. Lou-is, M.11.R., opened his address at Da.rficld last night with a review of this Kxiiibition, Ho characterised its management iis typical of the way in which the public affairs of the colony had been conducted for many years past. Prominent and capable ijicn, wiio devoted much timo and trouhlo to it, had been negiericd and instdted by the Government, and vet, when the Government look matters out of their hands, ita management compared moet unfavourably with theire. The matter of the Lxliibitioi awards was a flagrant example, and another was the disgraceful mismanagement of tho closing ceremony, which was arranged by the Government, «6 compared with the opening function, for which the Ceremonial Committee was responsible, and which was a credit to the colony. A quantity of Exhibition property was sold by auction to-day. The inside furniture, etc.. realised very satisfactory prices, but the contents of tho fernery mid flower beds outside met with a very poor sale, A bid of £150 was refused for the contents of the fernery as a whole, but only £53 was realised when tho ferns wero sold in lots as they stood.
