AUCKLAND OYSTER-BEDS
DISSATISFIED PICKERS, (Per Ukited Press Association.) ATiTCKT/AND, May. 2. There was a gathering ol about 50 oysterpickers in tho vicinity ot the Customs House this morning. It was gathered that they wero dissatisfied with tho action of the Government in not opening beds on which they could profitably work, and as a consequence had decided not. to take out a license. There are about 100 pickers in Auckland, and on inquiry 10-day it was ascertained that onlv three licenses had been applied for. These were taken out early yesterday morning, and since then no applications had been received, "although the season orjened yesterday. "It is this way," explained a picker to a Star representative. "The beds opened upiare innocent of oysters, and it 'would not pay us to take out a license. We talked mattery over this morning, and are more determined than ever not. to take out licenses. We will wait on the Minister of Marine and place before him our views. \\c think that the beds at Waibeke anil other places where oysters arc plentiful should'have been opened, and not the present lot, which need closing for a time to enable the fish to develop."
