BUTTER AND CHEESE.

(Per l T sited I'ress Association'.) WELLINGTON. April 29. The Secretary of the Department of Industries and Commerce lias received tho following report from tho Prodnco Commissioner in London:—"Unfortunately sinco the last Tonert concerning the market for butter thcro

lias not heeil an}' irr.pi"ovc7nont to record. \Tho only satisfaction that can b? obtained is tifivt during tho past week (.hero has been a somewhat steadier tone, and valuos have not receded further. Tho very heavy supplies of colonial butter, which this year sliov.', l»lh landed and nov; on the water, a groat increase over those of ln?t year at this time, lias un-(k-nbtoclly been tho chief cause of the declimi in vu'.ties. I have made extended inquiry as lo tho canso of the depreciation in price, raid can ascertain no other reason. Trade throughout the country is good. Tho retail demand is satisfactory, and cveiv other condition is such as to firm tho market under usual conditions. There aro so far 110 slocks being piaced in cold store. Tile price has not come sufficiently low to warrant speculation in tlrat manner in tho face of prospects of largo supplies. It is reported 'on the market hore that Siberia will show a largo incrcoso in her shipments of butler this season, and that tliese will commence to arrive in this country earlier than uminl. This outlook naturally will check speculation in colonial butter for cold storing. The cheeso market las bosu steadily good, although during tho past day or two it has not been so strong, and prices have been accepted for New Zealand cheese Od per cwt lower than last quoted. Thero does not, however, seem any likelihood of values falling very much. Thero is good demand throughout tho country. Stocks aro of reasonnblo compass, and holders are fan in their ideas It is not probable, therefore, great vail tako plnco boforo ail Xcw Zealand shipments are disposed of."
