WELLINGTON LAW SOCIETY.

(Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, April 24. Tho annual report of the Wellington Law Society shows that from 1883 the uum-' bcr of'solicitors practising in the .Wellington district increased from 72 to 200. ~o£ whom mora than half practise in Wellington. The solicitors practising in tho colony show an increase of 45 during tho year, there being 801 who now take out certificates, as against 756 last year. Four hundred and ninety-live solicitors practise in the North Island and 306 in the South —a difference of 189. Last year tho difference was 150. The estimated jiopulation of l-ho colony at the beginning of the year was 956,449 (including 47,731 Maoris; Cook and other islands are not included), and gave one 'solicitor to even' 1194 of population. or one to every 298 male adults. For flip purpose of this computation onehalf of tho population has been treated as male, and one-half of theso as adults. Last year, with a population of 930,193, the proportions wero respectively one to 1230 and one to 307. Tho practising solicitors: of tho colony are distributed as follow:— Auckland. 167; Canterbury. 117; Gisborne,, 20; Hawke's Bay, 38; Marlborough, 9; Nelson, 16; Otago. 114; Southland, 28; Taranaki, 50; Wellington 220; Westland, 22.
