MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS.
Mr W. Downie Stewart announces his candidature for South Ward in the forthcoming municipal olcctions. An address by__ Cr Connor to the ratepayers in High-Ward will be found elsewhere in ibis issue. Mr J. D. Cameron will be. a- candidate for Park Ward, St. Kikia, at the municipal elections. The supporters o[ Messrs .T. Haymes and T. B. Robertson mustered in strong force at tho conmiittco rooms, King street, last evening. Mr 11. Amhridgc being in the chair, The Scerctary (Mr F, 15ircha.ll) reported very favourably as regards f lie prospects of the candidates at the forthcoming election, and stated that tho members of tho committee who had undertaken an activo canvas: of the ward in the interests of the nominees of the Independent. Political Labour League had received most encouraging reports from all sources. Mr J. Ilaymcs intimated that in view of the fact that polling day was near at hand it. was absolutely. necessary that every effort, should bo made to induce the ratepayers to study well tho reforms set. forth in tho league's platform. Mr Robertson also addressed those present, and laid particular stress on, that plank of the platform which ho was pledged to support—namely, tho establishment in Dumxlin of markets for produce, which were a distinguishing feature of all tho important cities of Australia. Tho candidate also dealt with the importance of municipalising all food supplies with flic intention of doing away with monopolies. Mr William Henderson announces his candidature for First Ward in the Mornington Borough . Council, and Mr J. Hope intimates his candidature for Second Ward in the same council. AUCKLAND. (Pep. United Pjiess Association.) AUCKLAND, April 12. Six members of the city Labour ticket for tho coming municipal elections addressed a well-attended meeting at Ponsonby to-night. The chief planks in tho platform .put' forward wereMunicipali-sat-ion of gas, coal, meat, and milk supplies, and the establishment of workers' homes, ■and efficient sanitation. THE WEST COAST. _ (From. Oub Own Corhespoxdekt.l GREYMOUTIT, April 12. Matters in ■ connection with the forthcoming municipal elections in Greymouth are beginning to warm up. For the mayoralty Messrs Joseph Petrio and James Kerr are candidates. The former has served for 20 years on the council, and is a member of most of the local bodies. Mr Kerr has boon for four years on the Borough Council. For tho council election seven of the present members will be nominated, while fivo otliejs will be candidates. At Brenner it is probable that- Mr Pv. Alison, manager of the Tynoside mine, will bo elected Mayor unopposed.
DEATH OF AN OLD COLONIST (Per United Press Association.) _. WELLINGTON, April 12. Mr William Henry Eyes, at one time Superintendent of Marlborough, died in Wellington to-day; aged 88 years.
