THE FRUIT FLY.
STATEMENT BY THE MINISTER OF LANDS. (Per United Pbess Association.) CHRISTCfIURCH, March 27. Tho Minister of Lands lias received a telegram • staling that a. further outbreak of fruit fly has occurred at Napier. On being interviewed Mr M'Nab said ho lwlievcd that all was being done that couli be dono to deal with the menace- to tho orchards of the colony. Auckland was tho source of tho whole trouble. The original and only effective system was to destroy all consignments of fruit found affcctwl, and this system had never boon changed as far as the southern, ports wero concerned. Auckland dealers had secured permission to pick over tho fruit and to distribute tho apparently sound portion. As was to bo expected, t|ie fruit fly maggot developed later in some cases, and tho infection spread over the New Zealand orchards, Soon after taking control of tho department ho had given instructions that Auckland should revert to the old system, and that careful inspection should bo mado in idisti'icts where- suspicious consignments had been sent, Tho result .had been the discover}- of tho fly in each case.
