An extraordinary accident occurred yesterday on tho Port Hills, .in the direction of Godley Head Lighthouse. Two yomy men, Thomas Wales and John Grubb, sons of well-known Lyttelton residents, were out shooting rabbits on the hills overlooking tho harbour, about three miles beyond th? Sumner zigzag. Wales picked up a| rusty 61b 'Nordenfcldt shell lying tupoeks, which ovidently had been fired from Ripii Island Fort during tho firing practice held some months ago. After examining tho shell, Wales threw it on the ground, when it exploded. A fragment struck Wales in the upper part of the right thigh, inflicting a bad flesh wound, forti'matcly missing tho arteries. It was miraculous that both young men were not killed or seriously wounded by tho shell. Wales suftered a good deal of pain, but Gmbb promptly attended to his wounded companion. Hβ tore up his shirt and bandaged up. the ugly wound as well as be \vas able, and assisted Wales to wolj; back towards the zigzag After going with difficulty about three miles they met Robert Fcrester, of Lyttelton, who happened to be riding 'past. On learning of tho accident he rode into port, and a. van went out and brought Wales into Lyltelton, whero ho was attendee! to by two doctors. He is progressing satisfactorily.
