FOOTBALL.

SOUTHERN CLUB.. The twenty-third annual meeting of the Southern Football Club was hold in the Forbury Schcol Gymnasium last evening. Mr J. M. Callaway (president, of the club) occupied the chair, and there was a largo attendance of present'and prospective members. The Chairman, in moving tho adoption of, the report (already published), said that on the whole the play of Die club during tho past year had been very satisfactory, and tho club bad maintained its reputation. 'Die special feature of tho report, which was not otherwise a. specially brilliant one, was tho reference to tho winning of the Fourth Grade banner by the club. They bad brought homo the flag, and (bore was reason for the cub to bo very proud of that. It augured well for tho future. A club could not expect to be successful unless there were young members coming forward to enter the field of play. For the success of tho club, and of the Fourth Grade team in particular, they wore in a degree under a debt of gratitude to Mr Richardson, who had given his services to the club as coach. Members perhaps did not appreciate sufficiently the work of a coach. It was absolutely impossible for a club to succeed in the game unless close attention was paid to training, and in the winter they could not do that in a better plaeo than the gymnasium they had at their disposal. Ho would venture fo say that no club in the district had better facilities for training than tho Southern Club. Even more use could be made of tho gymnasium than had been Iho case in the past '■ year. The young members had used Iho gymnasium freely, and tho old members should do likewise. In Iho annual report of the 0.R..F.U. there was one paragraph which he specially noticed, and that was in reference to the fact that, although several eases of misconduct had been dealt with during the season, none of them was of a. serious nature, and that, tho behaviour of players during the season had been good. That paragraph would appeal to all. This was about bis twcJity-first anniversary as president of 1 tho club, and during tho whole of thai time, he had been proud of the position gained on tho field by the Southern Club. There wa.s a timo when people used to toll; slightingly of the Southern Club, but there was none of that now. The main point, in football was to bo good, clean sjwrts. There would then be none of tho silly criticism that, one read about football being a demoralising and brutal game. Ho was proud to say that the Southern Club did not lend itseif to that.—(Applause.) Mr T. K. Sidey, M.11.R., seconded the motion, and endorsed heartily everything that the chairman had said in regard to the play and •behaviour of the club. The report was a very creditable one indeed. The motion was carried unanimously. The balance, sheet, of the club showed a credit balance of £2 lis. The following office-bearers wore elected for the ensuing year:— Prauilenls. Mr .1. M. Callaway and Dr W. D. Milno; vice-presidents-Messrs T. K. Sidey, M.H.R.; D. Stevenson, P. Shaddock, J. Fogarty, .T. Wilson, C. Latham, C. Smeaton, G. Reid, and 11. Ilinton; secretary and treasurer, Mr V. G. Cavanagh; assistant secretary, Mr H. Alexander: insurance secretary. Mr 11. Alexander: General Committee—Messrs W. Foster, W. Kindlcv, J. Spence, -P. Shcehan, A. J. Miscall, E. T.- Leyden, A. Chambers, W. FullerIon; "Wednesday representative, Mr P. Edwards. The election of the Match Commillcc was left to the General Committee, tho former committee to consist of the captain and two non-players. Messrs Leyden and Shechan wore elected practice captains, and Messrs Briggs, Cavanagh, and Miscall were appointed delegates to the 0.U.F.U., while Messrs Kindlcy and Miscall were appointed auditors. Mr Kindley was appointed delegate to tho Athletic Sports Protection •Society. Mr ft li. Briggs was elected a life member of tho club, members.speaking enthusiastically of the services rendered by him. Twenty-five new members were elected^ A letter was received from ihe St. Peter's Club, slating thai 20 members of tho club wore desirous of being affiliated with the Southern Club as a Fourth Grade team, to he known as the Southern B, on condition that they appointed their own Selection Committee, and would not bo drawn upon to fill vacancies in other grade.?. Tho team would, however, be willing to place any emergencies at the disposal of other teams. It was decided to accept the offer. It was decided not to take part in the proposed tournament at the Christohurcb Exhibition. A letter was received from the Athletic. Club re affiliation with the 0.R.F.U.. and ihe club's delegates were given a free hand in the matter. Mr' Jf'Coll was appointed bon. trainer. Tho Chairman intimated that he would present a prize at the end ot the to the liest.trainod player in the club, the award to bo made on Mr M'Coll's recommendation.

NORTHERN ASSOCIATION CT.UR. The annual meeting o( the Northern Association Football Club was held last night in Misa Dormer's Tea Rooms, Hie president (Mr H. J. Duncan) occupying the chair, and over 60 members Doing present. The- President, in moving the adoption of tho report (already published) congratulated the cltd) on tho exceptionally largo attendance at tho mcetiug. He considered that tho conditions surrounding the club in the past eclisou afforded cause for extremo gratification. Not only had tho club secured the Senior Cup and tho Charity Banner—the two highest honours obtainable—but it had established for itself a reputation of playing a good clean game on all occasions, and there existed between the members of the club a most desirable feeling of goodfcllowship. Tho Senior contest, in Duncdin last year had been an exceptionally hard one, and thercioro therewas all tho more reacon for congratulating tho team on ite win. There was a great improvement, in tho attendance at training' during the season, and those who had taken this matter in hand had shown that they had the interests of the club and the game at heart. Mr E. S. Clarice seconded (ho motion, and in doing so brought forward a rather novel suggestion. Bo thought that a team having won such a position as the Northern had won Inst season should bo entitled during llw following season to wear somo mark distinctive of this honour. He suggested a band on one arm, with " Premier" engraved upon it, and on tho other arm a similar band displaying the word "Charity." The report was adopted, and the balance sheet, showing a credit balance ot £1 lis Wd, was similarly dealt with, The following office-bearers wore elected: President. Mr H. J. Duncan (ro-elccted): viee-proisidciils—Messrs D. Tannook, J. Havr.es, 0. Campbell, -T. Kearney, K S. Clarke. W. 11. Irvine, J. Moncrioff, A.'A. Adams, W. M. Roberts (all re-elected), J. W: Thomas. P. Young, W, M'Lanchlan, and J. Kvans; secretary. Mr James Timlin; treasurer, Mr John Timlin; Managing Committee—Messrs M. Chadwiek, A. Bell, and W. Kilgour; delegate to the Otago Sports Protection Society. Mr James Timlin; delegates to tho 0.F.A., Messrs \Y. Sinclair and P. Young; Selection Committee— Me.wrs J. Hayncs, A. Bell, and the captain of the First Eleven; auditors, Messrs R. 13. Irvine and W. M. Uttlcy.

ROSLYN ASSOCIATION CLUB. The nineteenth annual meeting of the Roslyii Association Football Club was hold in tho Roslyn Borough Council Chambers last evening. There were about 30 members present, and Mr R. H. Stables occupied the chair. In moving tho adoption of the report (already published), ihc Chairman said that tlie club had not. been very successful during the. past, season, but the winning of matches was not everything in connection with a football club, ami if the soeial side of the club's existence had been satisfactory they had not existed altogether in vain. He observed that full advantage had not been taken'of the club's training rooms at the Arthur Street School U.vmnasiuri). The club wa.s put to considerable expense in providing facilities for truining, and be thought it was a pity that year after year adverse comment had to be made that, members did not attend to practice. Ho was sure that if there, was s, proper and enthusiastic spirit among the members, of (lie club there would be no complaint about practice. The balance sheet showed a small credit balance, and (here were the usual number of unpaid subscriptions. lie thought the special vote of (hanks recorded lo Mr \V. 11. Irvine, secretary of the ().I'\A., was well timed and well deserved, and if ii had included all (he members of the O.V.A. it would not have been amiss. Mr Jl'Gillivray seconded the motion for the adoption of tho report and balance sheet, which y.a-s carried unanimously.

Eleven new member.? were elected. Mr Soundyi explained what had been done by the Otago Football Association in regard io the improvement of the grounds under its control, awl mentioned that the now_freehold ground, a short distance from Culling Park, which had been purchased by the association from the Assets Board, bad cost £850. The area was three acres and n-half, and it was proposed to finance the 'matter by the creation of a small land company. Dealing with the matter of tho registration fee, lie said the subscriptions were far 100 low to allow of sufficient funds being raised for the purpose of management, and it was intended to members to pay Is each towards the registration fee. He suggested that senior members who could not sec their way to continuo playing should volunteer their services to the lleferoos' Club, as old players would make tho best of referees. Ho notified'that 27 teams from the .schools would bo playing this year, and paid a compliment to tho Schools Committee for its efforts in this direction.—(Applause.) The Chairman mentioned that Mr Sound? would leave the following week for Hobart, and ho would not, in all probabiliiv. return to New Zealand. Ho paid a high tribute to tho work Mr Soundy had done for Association football while in New Zealand. Tho elect ion of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mr V. Smcafo'n (reelected); vice-presidents—Messrs L. Kcmnilz, \V. C. Allnutl, S. N. Brown, sen.. J. Havncs, S. N. Brown, jun, (all re-elected); auditor, Mr P. Braithwaite; secretary and treasurer, Mr Clark; practice captain. Mr Booklass; delegates to 0.F.A,, Messrs Clark and Bannernian (the latter to ho on the executive); General Committee—Messrs Mdllison. Ailchesou. M'Gillivray. Jopp, and Dow; Selection Committee—Messrs S. N. Brown,'jun., H. Neil), and the captain. A special vote of thanks was passed to the retiring secretary (Mr R. H. M'Lcod) for his services during? the past two years. It was resolved that the. delegates to the O.F.A. bo instructed to vote in favour of the motion re registration of players; tho delegates to he allowed a free hand to vole on (lie proposal re expenditure of association funds on the Mornington Ground. It was resolved Io hold the first practice on tho Asylum Ground on Saturday afternoon next at 2.30.
