NEW CHURCH AT WAIPIATA.

'Tlie ceremony of laying the foundation stone of flio Waipiata I J resbyteriah Church was performed yesterday in splendid weather ami in the presence of a large gathering. After the singing of a. hymn. l).v the congregation the Rev. .1. 0. Harkness (Wcddcrburn) offered a. prayer, and the Piov. 11. Williams read a portion of Scripture and gave a brief resume of ihc steps taken in connection with the building of tlie church. Air Williams then' called upon Mrs 15. W. Glendinning (Kokonga) to lay (lie foundation stone of the church. His Glendinning having declared the stone well and truly laid, the Rev. Br Nisbct (Dunedin) delivered a. short and appropriate address, and n substantial sum was laid upon the stone. When the ceremony was concluded an adjournment \vus made to the Waipiata Hall, where tea was partaken of. In tlio evening a social to celebrate the laying of the stone was held. The liev. 11. illiams, lafe pastor of the congregation, presided, audi the other speakers were Dr N'isbet (DiuiKlinl. and Mr J. R. Kirl: (Xosebv). The gathering was a most enjoyable and successful one, ail entertaining musical programme being contributed. 'lho church in eoursc of construction is to lie. built of Waipiata Milestone, with Daman freestone facings. It is to be 16ft by 30ft. within, with a vestry at one mid and a porch at the other. It- is estimated to cost about £400, a great proportion of which sum is now in hand. j
