CROMWELL NOTES.

(Ftoii Our Own Correspokdekt.) CROMWELL, February 22. Tho weather is unsettled, and there havo boon some line rains during the last week all over tho district. The river is keeping, fairly low. but it is more than likely that there will bo a rise before long. It is raining heavily hero to-day, and there is every appearance of it being general. Most of tho crops in tho Upper Clutha Valley are. cut. and stacked, and there has been a splendid harvest. Dredging is now assuming a little moro activity, as both the Electric dredges are at work 011 good wash.' All the directors arrived last night, and aro visiting the claims to-day. The unfortunate Junction Electric Company will probably be wound up now. This company had very Kid luck through l"<ing two ikedges by sinking, but the present dredge was on payable ground when they stopped. The machine is, however';' in "very bad order, besides being too light for the ground. Several of the Clutha River dredges are Btill idle, and a number of dredgemen have lately gone elsewliore to work. The feeling all over this district is now very keen 011 the railway coming through, also to have the llorven Hills and Kawaran linns cut up when tho leases fall in. There is no question about tho great value it would be to Dunedin if the line was through to Hawea, tor iininenso quantities of grain and stock could bo sent down.
