AMATEUR ATHLETICS.

NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS. (Pis United Pmss Association.) 'CKIUSTOHURCH, February 21. Tho eighteenth championship meeting held under tho auspices of the, New Zealand Amateur Atiilctib Association was opened this afternoon on tho Exhibition sports ground, and will he concluded on Saturday. Tho inept ing :s tho most important, athletic event held sinco tho Shrubb. Uiiffcy meeting, and the competitors, who munber over 150, como from all parts of tho colony. The weather this .afternoon was very fine, and although tho attendance of spectators was not. large at tho opening, it improved greatly (luring tho afternoon, and at its maximum was estimated at over--10,000. The ground is, of course, a. now one, hut it was in good condition, and some, ereditablo performances were put up. The feature of tho Hireling so fur is tho extraordinary succors of tho Wellington men, tho representatives from that p'rovinco having up Io the present practically carried everything before them. Of the championship events they wero first and second in the 100 Yards Flat, 440 Yards Flat, Long •lump, and Putting tho Weight, first and third in tho 120 Yards Hurdles, and second i't the Mile Flat.. Up to Iho prosent-thcy have scored 47 points for the championship shield, Canterbury lining second with 14 point*, and Olago Ihird'with 8. Auckland and Southland have not scored yet. Tho Wellington representatives would liayo done even better than they have done had it not been for the fact, that they lest the Threemile Walk, which they looked upon as a certainty, owing to H. K. Kerr being railed o!f toward the latter part nf the race, and when he had established a big lead. The raco was a somewhat curious one. For tile first few laps I'. H. Stubberfield (of Chri.itchurch), Iho present champion, was leading, ■bi'ing followed by A. C. If. Rowland (Canterbury), and H. li Kerr (Wellington), in -that, order. Both tho Christclmrcli men were walking with nil easy style, and apparently without effort, but Kerr seemed to Iw very uncomfortable, and was walking in a stilf, jerky sort of style. At the fifth lap Kerr changed his style to a kind of springy wall;, which was at once commented upon. He increased his pj.ee considerably, however, and soon had Rowland and Stubberfield well behind. Rowland, uho had passed •Stubberfield. certainly made a_ good attempt to reach Korr again, but bis challenge resulted in Kerr putting on a spurt, which absolutely killed Rowland's effort. Shortly afterwards Korr was warned that _he was departing from the proper walk, and for a time he adopted a more accurate style. He brake again, howevsr, and was called olf. At the time ho was in a. very loadmg position, and had ho continued would most undoubtedly lmve won. Some dissatisfaction was manifested at, the course taken, and Kerr was cheered when he reached the pavilion. SUibbarnclrt appeared to tiro at a. fairly early stage of tho race, and ho was soon outdistanced by Rowland, who was in gdo<l form. The walking of Stubberfield and Rowland was very fair, and no exoeption. was taken to their styles. The meeting was very well managed, all the events being got off up to time. Saturday will bo tho concluding day.
