THE SOUNDS EXCURSION
RETURN OP THE AVAIKARE. The AVaikare, .which proceeded to tho West Coast Sounds on the. annual cruise on January 15, returned yesterday, her 150 passengers having spent a most enjoyable time oil the trip,, notwithstanding tho fact that tho weather was net of the best. The work of arranging entertainments was entrusted to the following committees, the members of which carried out'their duties well:—Chairnan, Mr A. T. Keys, of Crosswoll, New South Wales, Messrs A. 11. Lindemaii, C. A. Liggatt, T, S. Grade; AV. A. German, AV. P, Dunlop, L. Band, T. M. Dackwin, Captain tho Hon. K. D. Ryder, G. Kerr; Ball Committee—VV. 11. German, Captain R. D. Ryder, C. A. Liggatt, Mrs Chase-Morris, Mrs Mace; Regatta and Sports Committee—T. S. Grade, T. M. Dackwin, L. E. Brown, J. M. Cameron; Financo Committee—L. Band, AV. P. Dunlop; Musical Mis D, T. Syme, L. l?snd;. Card Committee—Captain Basse, H. II.; Lindemaii, Miss Kerr, Miss Holdcn. The' vessel' reached Preservation Inlet on Wednesday, leth inst., and proceeded to tho head of Long Sound, then returning to~Cuttlo Cove. The trip 3 to Isthmus and Revolver Bays next morning had to be reluctantly abandoned on account of intermittent- rain. Tho Sports Committer, however, promptly came to tho rescue, and arranged deck sports, which were carried through in a splendid spirit, practically everyone assisting. Tho fixture for tho was a concert, followed by an impromptu dance.
The AVaikare then visited Dusky .Sound, and afterwards proceeded up Wet Jacket Arm, thenco through Breaksea. Sound, and up Doubtfnti Sound to tho bead of Hall's Arm.
11l George Sound, which was visited on the C'lst inst., a fancy dress ball was held, the first prize falling to Miss Moore. Tho regatta, was held on Wednesday, 93rdinst., the following being tho results:— Sailors and Firemen's Race: First, Firemen— AV. Smith (how), ,T. Hoskins, P. Flannagan, 5. Trevener (stroke), J. On the 2-lth inst. Milford Sound was visited, and on Saturday the return voyage was commenced. Oil Saturday morning at 8 o'clock the <*: cvermnent steamer ITinemoa, with ilio Minister of Education anii a party of tourists, went alongside, and thoso on board visited the AVaikare, and were generously entertained by tho captain.
