MINING SUMMARY.

Very little of interest falls to be recorded in the mining industry. Tho majority of the dredges which were closed down for the holidays have now resumed operations, in many cases after having had a thorough overhaul and being put in firet-elass working order. A few have cither not started, or. have not overcome the difficulties of opening on). Tho season is expected to pTove exceptionally favourable for gorge dredging, as it ia anticipated that the river will fall to u suitable level very early. Tho Antonio Flat dredge (West Coa.it) is almost complete, and it is expected that active operations will lie commenced immediately.

At Blackwaler (West Coast) tho new find, adjacent to the old St. George, at Snowy Creek, recently made is highly spoken of. The track is 4ft wide, carrying about 2ft Bin of solid slone, showing gold. The find appears to be solid enough and very promising. It is on a parallel line of country with that of the Blaokwater reefs, and is about two mi>s east of them. At the Alpine mine the lf.teal news is that in Hie uprise iroin No. 7 level the country has softened and water is coming in freely. It is expected that the-reef will be struck in the uprise within a- few days, confirming the continuity of tho new reel's in No. 4 and Xo. 7 levels. 'Matters at' this mine are said to hi very promising. A company is now being formed to conduct operations. A find of antimony is reported from tbe Upper end of the Maniohito district. Samples were forwarded to Profe&sor Parky whose analysis was very favourable. The professor has forwarded them to Wellington, telieving ■that other valuable minerals are included in tlie quartz.
