THE WEST COAST. (Fsou Ons. Oira Cokbisfoxdiht.)

GREYJIOUTH, January 27, Marry of tho sluicing claims on the West Const are at a, standstill in consequence of the continued dry weather. Operations at the Papaim Company's lease. near Blackball, are being energetically pushed forward. Tho engineer lias 120 'men at work, and good progress is being made, especially during ijio prevailing fino weather. A road connecting tho main Blackball road -with tho sito at tho end of tho branch railway has been convplcted, while the route of the incline has been cleared and the work of formation started. Tracks have also been formed to the sito where it is intended to drive the tunnel. -Tiiis work will be put in hand during the next few days. It is intended to energetically push on with the works, but it will be many months ero the company will bo in a, position, to place coal en tho market.

Much interest centres in the operations being conducted by tho Brunner Prospecting Association at Langdons, in tho Paparoa Iwnges. Tho tunnel has ken driven 300 ft into the hill through favourable lookin" country, thus completing the first contract" A second contract was let for driving another 300 ft, and tho contractor has made a. start, and is making very good progress. It is confidently anticipated that a good reef shou'.d bo struck by tho time tho tunnel is in the distance- montioned.
