In tho House of Lords Earl Crewo (President, nf the Council) stated that the House of Commons, had disagreed with the House of Lords' Amendments in the Education Bill because they completely altered the character of the bill, contradicting its principle.
Lord Laiii-downe protested that the House of Commons' message was unprecedented, curt, and almost contemptuous. Ho said that the proper course would he for the House of Lords to insist- upon tho reinstatement of the amendments, but he moved that tho House of Lords piot«-;t against the innovation in constitutional procedure on the pari, of the House of Commons in rejecting the amendments without, assigning specilie reasons. He further moved the adjournment of the debate to enable the Government to make a delinite statement.
Karl Crcwo indicated tliat tlie Government was willing to drop clause 6, which makes attendance during the hours set .apart for religious instruction expressly non-compulsory, and also to permit the assistant tcaclicrs in "facilities" schools to volunteer to denominational teaching in urban and the really large schools ill Ihc rural areas.
