RATING ON UNIMPROVED VALUES.
TO THE EDITOR.
I Sin,—l noticed in your issue of Saturday, . Ut inst., a report of a meeting of the Ratepayers' Association, wherein one, Mr J. Neil, stated that Invcrcarglll had given the rating on unimproved values a two years' trial, with the best results; also, that ■ 'it was significant that tho last attempt. i mado to secure a -reversion to tho old ' systom was beaten by two to one. Now, : what Mr Noil stated is quite contrary to fact. Tho last attempt to.revert to the old .' aystom was in May of this year, when a poll ' was taken, which resulted as follows:—In favour of.tho unimproved, 460; in favour of ,-tlio' old system, 300. So you will see by i thiß that it tvas it good way off being 'a two.to one defeat. My advice to the ratepayers of Dunedin is to have nothing I whatever' to do with rating on unimproved values, as it has proved to bo a delusion and a snare. I could quote no end of arguments against it. and will probably do eo on a future occasion.—l am. etc., E. A. Ekensteen. j ' Invercargill. Scptenrtxr 2.
