Tho Harvard - Cambridge Universities boat race attracted a record attendance, including thousands of Americans. Tho enthusiasm was intense. Cambridge won the toss, and chose the Surrey side of the river. The boats got away at 4.29. The Cambridge were smarter at the start, and were soon leading by a length. Passing Crabtree Reach tlioy bad increased 'the lead to two and a-quarter lengths. Harvard, putting 011 a spurt, shot Hammersmith oridge a length and a-quarter in the wake of Cambridge, Imt the effort was valueless. Though Harvard rowed a dogged stern chase Cumoridge continued to improvo tlieir position, leading by three lengths at Barnes's, and eventually winning by two lengths in 19min 18sec. ' The bet" ling was 6 to 4 on Cambridge.
