DEPARTMENTAL PROMOTIONS.
TO THE XDITOK. Sir,—The letter appearing under tits above heading does little credit to tl>« writer, whoever ho may lie, and as an old publio servant I can only come to the conclusion that ho is one of those (unfortunately wo have a good many in different branches* of the service) who labour under a constant grievance owing to his own inefficiency. After many years in different* parts of Now Zealand, and a varied experience of different " heads," I can honestly say that wherever stationed piy superior* have been both courteous anc! gentlemanly, and 60 far as lay in their power most considerate towards their subordinates. It in not my intention to be drawn into i controversy, but such a letter should not be allowed to go without protest, owing to its tendency to mislead tho public ae to the general good feeling which as a whola exists jn the publio service. Having such a high opinion of the word " gentleman,!' I anl surprised that your correspondent show*) 6uch a lack of tho qualities most necessary to' place him on' that plane, as is obvious by his rcfcronoa to "canines," etc.
The whole letter, Sir, is a sorry " whine," and can only have been penned by one who is suffering from want of appreciation br his superiors, whether real or imaginary Jp of course, cannot say.—l am; etc,, ■ . Public Skbvant-NoIX
