The Department of Industries aixl Commerce received the following cable from the High Commissioner, dated London, August J:— There is a good demand for all lamb. Competition amongst holders to clear slocks has lowered vr.lucs slightly. The average price is; Canterbury brands, 4Sd; other than Canterbury, I:;d. The mutton market is dull and weak. Light-weight Canterbury brands are scarce, and are quoted al 3}d. Heavyweights are selling at ;ljd. The average price for best quality North Island mutton is 31 and rwnd class quality is quoted at •lid. The beef market is steady at the last quotations. The butter market is firm, with an upward tendency. Choice Now Zealand brands, which are scarce, are quoted at 108s per cwt. Danish is quoted tit 115s, Irish at 107s, and Canadian at 103s per cwt. The cheese market is steady. New Zealand stocks nro exhausted, and Canadian makes are selling at 58s per cwt. The hemp market, is quid, and small business is being done at about the same pliccs as cabled last weok. There, is scare-sly any demand for cocksfoot teed. Bright, clean, dressed 171b New Zealand seed is quoted nominally at 4Gs per cwt. Shipments from the River Plate during the month of July, 1110G, wero as follow:— Mut-ton-liiverpool, 143,203 carcases: Hull, 10,873; Newcastle, 10,013; Southampton, 3351; Cardiff, 13,137; London. 131.933;-tntal carcases, 322,515. Lamb—Liverpool, 3200 carcases; Hull, 1135; Cardiff, 1879; Southampton, 233; London, 13.G07;-lo!al carcases. 19,114. The average price for River Pla!o mutton is 5Jd. Lamb from the same country is quoted at 4.id. SALE OF PROPERTY. Messrs Wright, Stephenson, and Co. (Ltd.) report naviug sold, on account of Mr James Mac Donald, of Dipton, Southland, his Bcnmr.ro property containing 4009 acres 2 roods 3 poles, being sections 33 i, GSC, K7, and 427, llokonui i:iirvey district, and lota 1 and 2 on the plan of part of Bemnore- Estate, together with the 'lease in perpetuity of 1052 acres, being section 795, llokonui survey district, at a satisfactory figure, to Mr Thomas Mitchell, of Warwick Downs Estate, Olapiri. As this Bemnore country lies iright into Warwick Downs, both properties can bo very conveniently worked from one homestead. About 300 acres on Bemnore have been ploughed, and aro nc-w either in English grass or turnips, and about 1090 acres more are ploughablc. Tile balance is mostly silver tussock country, including the sunny face of the Bastion block. The property, at present is carrying about 1500 fine, big, strong crossbred breeding ewes and hoggets. These have been taken over with the property. When more of this conn- ' try has been broken up tho carrying capacity will be \ory largely increased, and should prove a profitnblo investment to the new owner. .Cd , ORAIN AND PRODUCE REPORTS. Messrs Dalgcty and Co. (Ltd.) report as follows:—We held our usual weekly sale of grain and produce at our stores on Monday, when we submitted a large and representative, catalogue to the usual attendance of buyors and others interested in the trade. Compctilioti was keen for all lines on offer, and our catalogue was quitted at prices on a par with quotations:— A Oats.—Willi practically no outside inquiries " merchants are not operating to any extent, : and the market in consequence- remains in almost the same dull condition as at our last report. Apart from local sales of feed lines mid small parcels for seed, which are now meeting with more inquiry, there- is little business passing. Wo quote :■ Prime milling, 2s 31d to 2s Id; good to best feed, 2s 2}d to 2s 3d; inferior, 2s to 2s Id per bushel (sacks oxlra). Wheat.—The market is very firm at late " quotes, although little business is passing. Farmers aro not pushing the salt of their consignments. Choice Tuscan (Central Otago' preferred) still meets with favour from millers, but medium and inferior lines of Tuscan and velvet are harder to place at quotations.
