MEETINGS OF SOCIETIES
The Pioneer Lodge, 1.0. G.T., had a splendid meeting on Tuesday, Bro. 1). Gain. C'.T., presiding. The especial attraction was a recitation competition (or sisters oi ihe older, [our lodges being represented by fire candidates, liros, Bxscand :mhl Hut-ton acted as judges, una their decision was: Sis. A. Barton (PioiK-.er) 1, Sis. B. South (Hope of Duncdiu) -, Sis. Thomas (Rescue);), Sis. Peterson (Hopo of Caversham) •!, Sis. Watling (Rescue) 5. In making their award the judges said the first thre-j competitors wore separated but by a very few points, and the general avenge of elocution, as well as merit of pieces chosen, was vtry high, and they heartily coi\gratuli>.icd the competing sisters on their courage Mid ability. Aft-er the competition Ero. Buscand (the organising agent of the J.0.G.T.) gave a most helpful and inspiring address, bein" listened to with the greatest attention. He urged members to use to the full the splendid possibilities of the older for pushing forward Hie grand _ lio-licenso question and teaching the principles of total abstinence. Bro, Bascand pointed out that all the leaders of tlie Temperance party were Gocd Templars, or had been, and it was a great pity that so many of them had to go outside the order to find opportunities of carrying on the work. Hearty votes of thanks were passed to Bro. Baseand for his splendid address, to Bros. Bascand and Hutton for their services as judges, to the competitors for coming forward, and to visitors for their presence. These were suitably acknowledged, and the meeting was then closed with the usual ceremonies.
Iviinhoe, 1J.A.0.D,, held ils usual fortnightly meeting on Monday at the Odd--lel lows' Hall. Albany sreet, V.A. Bro. Broekie presiding. There was a good attendance of UK-mbeis antl visitors, oi officers for tin) ensuing term were taken as follows A.D., Bro. Broekie; Y.A., Bro. Settle; Secretary, Brn. Gibson; Treasurer, Bro. Hutchinson; 1.G., Bvo, A. Smith, juii.; 0.G., Bro. iiill; A.D.B.'s, Bros. King and Thompson; Y.A.li.'s, > Bros. Fowler and Clapwortliy; M.G., Bro. Havnes: Auditors, Bros. Havncs and Hunter. P.D.P. Bro. Hunter moved a motion standing in his name—via.: "That the special funeral levy of Gd per'member be paid out of the Incidental Fund." The motion was declared lost by a majority of 01. A letter was rcccived from tho Premier, the Hon. Mr Hall-Jones, acknowledging a letter of sympathy with the Government on tho death of the late Prime Minister. P.D.P. Bro. Hunter presented Bro. Fowler with a trophy on behalf of the R.A. Chapter. Bro. Fowler having won tho V.A. competition. Bro. Fowler suitably thanked tho lt.A. Chapter, After a pleasant gamo of quoits the lodge closed in tho usual manner. Three candidates were proposed, and the receipts amounted to £105 Os 9d.
The quarterly summoned meeting of the Antidote fiivisiou No. 118, Sons and Daughters of Temperance, was held on Monday evening, Bro. W. Facer presiding. A latgc number of members were present, and three candidates were initiated with the usual ceremonies. Bro. E. T. Clarke, assisted by Ero. A. Adam, installed tho officers for the halfyear ns follow:—W.P.. Sister J. Johnston; \Y. A., Bro. lv T. Clarke; secretary, Bro. \V. Crav.-ford (re-elected): asst. secretary, Sister I°. Thorn (re-elected); treasurer, Bro. AV. Newman (re-elected); chap., Bro. Commissiong; con., Sister J. Chave; A.C.. Bro. H. Crawford: I. Sent., Bro. E. J. King; 0.5., Bro. H. P. Newman; P.V.P.. Bro. AY. Pacer. The usual vote of thanks was accorded to the installing officers, Bro. E. Clarke responding. The division was then closed with the usual ceremonies by Sister J. Johnston, W.P. Receipts. £212 15s 4d.
The quarterly meeting of Pioneer Lodge No. 1, 1.0.0. F., was held in tlie Oddfellows' Hall. Rattray street, on Tuesday evening, Bro. J. Johnson presiding in the X.G.'s chair. One candidate was admitted. The balf-vearly election of officers for the ensuing term was proceeded with with the following result:—NX!., Bro. J. Jlichie. jun.; Y.G., Bro. W. Foster; secretary, Bro, F. M'Arthur, P.G. (re-elected); treasurer. Bro. G. Latimer, P.G. (re-elected); auditors-Bros. G. Springer, P.G.. R. M'Kinlay, P.G., and 0 Micliie, sen., P.G. (all reelected); trustees—Bros. H. Gourley, T. li. Christie, and C. Johnson (all re-ele:ted). A vote of confidence in the lodge surgeon (Dr E. J. O'Neill) was also passed. Receipts, Is Cd.
The opening social of the Caversham Pres. byterian Young Men's Club was held on Friday in the Presbyterian Hall. There was a, large attendance of members anil friends, ami a very enjoyable evening was spent. Tile Chairman (Mr J. Brown) referred tc the many advantages offered by the club tc young men, suid hoped that the old members would rally round the club, making it as prosperous in the coming year as it had been In the past. During the evening refreshments were handed Tountl. An excellent programme, consisting oi games and musical items, was gone tluough, Solos were eontjiiuW by Hiss B.
