THE LOCAL OPTION POLLS.
At, the quarterly meeting of the Council of Churches held in First Church Hall on tho 12th inst, Mr A. S. Adams, in the course of his remarks dealing with the local option poll of December last, said that the Temperance, pirty had made a tremendous perance party had inado a tremendous movement forward. The day after tho poll they were told there had been a set-back to the temperance movement throughout, the colony. Ho would welcome :i few more set-backs like that, and if they had two or throe more like it there would bo no need to court another, for there would hi no liquor trade in rhe colony.—(Applause.) lie had taken out these figures to show tho position clearly:— Increase lucrease
In six years 'he mimlw of voters hud increased by 127,690, tho increase in favour of no-license in i lie same period being 100.536.—(Applause.) The percentage of no. license vole; in Ihe colony was 51.28. The percentage d£ iio-licen.se votes in Otago was 64-.42, and in Dunedin 49.13. The majority of no-license votes (193,768) over continuance (162,88*) in the colony was 15,88*. As far as Otago was concerned the result hud been achieved in spite of the strenuous efforts of the other side, mid in spite of '.ho fact that money was poured out :ike water during the 12 months previous to the poll, and methods were adopted that he was glad were not adopted ;n the temperance camp Otago still occupied the premier position for the colony with reference to the no-liconsc vote.—(Applause.) He wfs delighted to know that Uamaru and Invcreargill had both secured no-iieense. He believed those two towns would present such a demonstration as to make no-license irresistible at no distant date. One of the most satisfactory features of the campaign was that the attempt to upset the poll in luvereargill was absolutely unsuccessful. It had shown that the new law was more satisfactory than the law hail been in the past, and" that the ijolls had reasonable protection now.—(Applause.)
