PERSONAL NOTES.

A cable readied Auckland this week announcing that Mr Richard Powell Cooper, head of the well-known firm of Cooper dip proprietors, has been created a baronet. Mr Garnet Tiibman, assistant dispenser at the United Friendly Societies' Dispensary, has accepted a position ns representative for the Australian house of Messrs Burroughs, Wellcome, and Co., London. Mr Tnbman leaves Dunedin for Sydney by the s.s. Mokoia on January 2 to take up his new duties. At the club room of the Dunedin Banjo Mandolin, and Guitar Band on Thursday night advantage of the opportunity was taken by the gentlemen members of the band to present the conductor (Mr H. 0. Stokes) with a small token of tho esteem in which he is held by the members, before disbanding for the usual summer vacation. The presentation, which took the form of a handsome silver-mounted walking stick and sovereign puras, both suitably inscribed, was made by Mr Erridge, who, in a few well-chosen words, referred to the many excellent qualities of Mr Stokes, a.ml said the members could not let the occasion pass without showing in a. tangible fonii their appreciation of (ho conscientious manner in -which their conductor had laboured to make everything in connection with the band n pueress. Mr Stokes, who was token completely by surprise, feelingly and suitably responded, and in the course of his remarks said that he would like to make special mention of the very able a,nd willing assistance he had received at all times from the joint secretaries. Messrs Turner and Brridgc. A musical programme was then gone through, items being rendered by Messrs Steven, Errid»e, Turner. Stoltes, Harrison, Justice. Aldred, Seclye, Prentice, and Master A. It. Gordon, the proceedings closing with the hearty rendering of "Anld lang syne" by all present.

Miss King, of Oninatn, has been'unpointed to the vacancv in (he. Southland Girls' Hi<»h School caused by (he retirement of Miss Avion.

At the last meeting of the Mataura Presbytery Mr D. D. Scott was licensed to preach the Gospel. A call from the Kolso congregation to Mr G. 11. Jupp was sustained, and it was decided that Mr Jnpp's ordination and induction should take place on January 10.
