ATTEMPT TO BREAK PRISON.

Ilarry Hart, a prisoner serving a sentence of four years for various offences, tried to break gaol yesterday. While Ihe warder's attention was diverted ho. with tho aid of Ihe window bars, scrambled up tho angle of tho courtyard, and had got on top of a 14ft iron fence with serrated edge, when the warders sighted him and brought him down by threats to shoot. Hart had provided himself with a roller lowel to navigate tlio teeth of the fence. Hart is a married man, has served sentences in the north for forgery and bicycle stealing, and on several occasions lias tried to escape from constables, 110 is a man of athletic build. Those in a position to know slate that the man is more fool than criminal. He was charged this afternoon with attempting to escape gaol and breaking a window in the prison. He 'piuaded " Not guillv." but gavo evidence on oath lhat he did not mean lo escape, but lo ventilate alleged irriovances. I-To had been put to hard labour, which he was not used to, and had done his best. One cold morning while shovelliiiT ho laid down tho shovel to restore circulation' in his hands. The warder said he would charge him with loiloring and disobedience. For that, he irot six days on bread and wafer. Ho admitted- lie had done hard labour in Auckland. At. Lyltejton Gaol ho worked at. the trade of tailoring. Mr M'Carlhy. S.M.. ordered that Hart forfeit marks to an extent that would have taken a year oft his sentences.
