THE WEST COAST. (Faoii Our Own Correspondent.) GRBYMOUTH, September 10. The timber trade has been particularly busy for some time past, and this condition is expected to bo maintained for somo time, tho demand being better than during any part of the year. The shipment of coal has also improved, the State mine being kept wel! employed. One train on Saturday brought down 450 tons. A mistake occurred in the bore hole that, is being put down to test the celebrated Moodie Creek seam. When the rods wcie down 1250 ft the looso liug found above tho seam was tapped and closed in upon the rods. Special appliances aro being made to recover tho rods. When work will bo resumed the coal is certain to, be struck in less than 20ft. The seam is the finest one on tho Coast, and said to be equal to the best coal.
Dredging matters are quiet. -The Cornwall dredge, held privately, is' on grand ground, and is paying handsomely. I'he Pactolns No. 1 dredgo got 87oz 13divt for 130 hours. Tho No. 2 dredge was repairing. The Jamieson's Reward dredge washed up 50oz, with improving wash at the end of the week. Bignell's No * Town. dredge got 34Jes for eight days. This appears to be tho bottom of the south block stone. The crosscut 'from the incline was driven 16ft. Tho total distance cast is 30ft. The drive is now in nioe slate country. HARTLEY AND RILBI COMPANY. TO THE EDITOE. Sir,—l received yesterday a notice to attend on extraordinary meeting of tlio nbove company, to be held on the 18th of this month at 4 p.m. I should like to ask, through you, why these meetings aro fixeS for such an unreasonable hour? There are a, number of shareholders, like myself, who would like to bo present and have the opportunity of meeting the directors and officials at least once a year, but cannot do so unless at very considerable inconvenience owing to the time fixed for the meeting, In my opinion the greatest facilities should be given to shareholders in any concern where their money is invested of meeting those who are really employed, by them (seeing they receivo fees) 111 administering the affairs of the company, and to that end the meetings should be convened for the evening, so that as many shareholders as possible could avail themselves of what cannot be regarded as a privilege, but their absolute right. I trust that the directors .of the abovo company will remember in the future that only a few favoured by fortune are able to attend r. meeting at 4 o'clock in the afternoon, and that those wlm ha-vo money invested in tho company, b? it ever so small an amount, are justly entitled to' consideration.
I regret exceedingly that, seeing the articles of association have been'amended, and the meeting on Iho 18th is to confirm the resolution carried at the last meeting 011 28th of August, the directors did not feel it incumbent on them to endeavour to secure a? large on attendance of shareholders as , possible at these two meetings! by. fixing the time at an hour calculated to obtain that'object. Trusting that this, letter may be the means of inducing officials of public Mtapauies to take a eoinowhat broader view ot?Fhe matters mentioned than they have hitherto donoVam, etc.,
