Mr Kettle, S.M., in tho Police Court called attention to the large number of arrests of drunken persons aftcn 10 p.m., which indicated.' he said, that inebriates hacl« been turned out of publichouses. He thought the police should visit the hotels and prevent publicans serving drunken men, because the number of arrests after closing time went to show excessive drinking was going on somewhere. Sub-inspector Black stated that constables on their beats did not regularly visit hotels.
A Mount Eden prisoner's schemc to seoure a transfer to Wellington Gaol was exposed in tho. Police Court this morning. Robert Pippott, who is serving _a sentence, was charged with having obtained £4 from William A. Turner by false pretences at Pohangfria, neai Wellington, in March, 1897. Ho pleaded not guilty. Chief Deteotive Marsaok aeked that tho oliargo should be withdrawn He said the information was laid upon accused's own confession. He was satisfied he had done so because he wkhed to lie transferred to Wellington, as a pica of not guilty to the charge would necessitate a trial there. The magistrate adopted Deteotive Marsuck's view, ajid allowed the information to bo withdrawn.
WANGANUI, June 10. A private coble recoived here yesterday from Major .Hughes states that the Bisley team hava arrived at London, all well.
PALJIERSTON NORTH, June 10. Entries closed yesterday for the winter show, commencing here on th« 20th inst. There is a substantial increase on last year's figures. One hundred and forty-one exhibits of dairy produce are entered, and there arc 429 entries for roots, vegetables,' and fruits, making a total of 570, against 461 last year. In tho poultry ecciion there arc 1150 entries recorded, as against 921 last year. AH the space av&ilahle for machinery is taken up. The Governor has consented to open the exhibit-ion.
WELLINGTON, June 10. Father Hays, wlw arrived here this morning, has addressed 27,000 people during his New Zealand tour, and has takei 10,125 pledges. In answer to petitions presented to him, he has decided to give addresses at Stratford and at Gisborne, but he has had to reiuso a request to deliver an address at • Whangarei, his health and time not permitting a further extension of bis programme. His medical adviser urges him to rest for a fortnight at Rotorua, but he does not think he can do so. He wants to leave for- England.in the second week of July, via San Francisco.
