FIRES.
(Per United Pbess Association.) HOKITIEA, May 19. A fire at Ross last night gutted a building owned by Mr Phillips, and occupied by Morgan (hairdiesser) and M'Carthy (upholsterer). Insurance on tho building, £150 in the Norwioh Union. The stock was uninsured. A small wooden five-roomed house, situated on the foreshore at Lower Deborah 13ar, was totally destroyed by fire about 7.30 p.m. on Tlnuulay The building was tho property of Mr Andrew M'Donald, and occupied by tluce fishermen, named Kdnard .Tones. Albert Lewis, and Alfred Lewis. Tho two Lewises were away fishing. Jones went to bed about 7 o'clock, leavinc a file burning in an open fireplace, and shoitly nftervaids lie was awakened by tho partition of the room benur on fire. He at once got Up, and found the whole place in flames, and picking tip a few clothes escaped by the window. Tho furniture and effects wore totally destroyed, their value being about £21. The house, which was a very old one, valued at about £75, was insured in the Standard office for £50.
