MIDDLEMARCH SHOW.

President, Mt W, Moynihan; vice-presidenls --Messrs J. Elliott, 11 R. l[ lmlw M(, jfmucs Tisdall sen.; committee-Messrs /I- J - Hobertson. aen., P. Atkinson, ir i'i OT °-T- T.Vdnll. sen., if. Jones', J. K. Browii, .11 irm°" r, i -f" Jfalliewson; treasurer, j[r O. M Donald; secretary, Mr R. Walker.

I ho Strath-Tsiiwi Agricultural ami Pas- ' Society was favMrod with excellent neatner i:; the Parly pari: gf Mondav and a very large attendance, for its fourth* annum .-.io\v. Unfortunately, in Iho nflonionsi a strong nor'-wester sprang up which nlavod liawi: with 11, f! touts and generally' nude tiling iiii«nnforlul)lt\ Tho lii-jli wind did liot. however, seem to dump Dip ardour of °iliiw the visitors or the oftifi,*i 1 . us events were kept in progress 'infil after fi o'clock, ihc president (Mr J J. Moynihan). assisted by Ini mnsl. imminent committee. mid hi* invaluable secretary (Mr K. Walker), did nil in his })o\vor to make llio show n succoss, ami his cfTorls wore not unrewarded. Tho Morning-ton Jirn-:r> .Hand \v:i,s in* attendanco all day, and did not stint, its music. There is, however, 0110 drawback in connection with tho Strath-Taieri show, and Hint is the want of a proper catalogue. Officials, press i'<:pi-csentalivcs, unci tho general public, if they wnnfc information, liavo to v/ado through a large shoot, of pnnor called th" schedule, and then rem) namra off littio cards, in order to try and obtain corrcct. information, whereas a catalogue would not only save Jill this unnecessary trouble, but. would probably bo revenue producing. The difficulty appears lo be. in tho committee accepting entries up lo .such a lata hour a.s it dees, but if it, ;nive early notice of its intention lo publish a ealaiogne and close the entries on a definite date the farmers would soon fall in line. In justice, however, t,o the das stewards it imist bo saill that thoy made the reporter's work as light as poihlil* Owing principally to Hie 'fact that Easier Monday fell on such a late date this year, the entries wore not ;o numerous as lost year, hut 011 the wholo the. exhibits were fully np to tin: average. In shorthorn cattle the principal honours fell to Mr •Fames Tisdall. sou . hut Hie Bull Championship foil to Mr AY. Bennett. Mr AY. D. Mason was tho principal prizetaker in tho Ayrshire class, and, as might have biieu expected, Messrs Murray, Koberls, and Co. carried all before them in the Polled Angus classes. Mr \V. Kirkland's dairy cows called forth very favourable comments from the judge, and the same exhibitor also carried off tho honours in fat eattlo. Tho entries for tho championship in thoroughnieda this year were routined to Legerity and Mariner, New Ileadford, although "being well representee) by his stock, which confpeted for Mr Gately's special prizes, being absent. Air Tisdnll had 110 competition to meet with lii.s trotter Hildago, but the stallion well deserved his first, honours.' The judge was especially well pleased with the weight-carrying backs, and said that the winners would have scored in any show. There was poor competition in the troopers' iioi-se class, but Mr Kirkland's winner was much admired. The dairymen's turnouts were all good, and quite up to town show style. In draughts, Mr D" M'Donald and Air T. I!. Conelly both beat the old stager Hatfield with Herewitrd Saxon nnd North respectively, but in the stock Hatfield scored decisively. His owner (Mr James Tisdall, sen.) practically scooped tho pool in tho draught classes, and all his stock ave sired by tho well-known Hatfield. Ilis best exhibits were Gipsy Queen (a three-year-old filly) and his two-year-old colt, and a whitelegged geiding in the three-year-old class was also greatly admired. Mr Tisdall also won tho first prize for both three and fourhorse farm teams. In merino sheep,' Messrs -Murray, Roberts, and Co, had no opposition, but their stock wiia all good. Some very good Southdown sheep were shown by Mr John M'Lean, from Hyde. Messrs Hurray, Roberts, and Co. were beaten in

the majority of the fat sheep classes by Mr W, Kirklaiu), who had some splendid exhibits panned. Tlio dogs on the whole wero a poor lot. The pigs, although comparatively few, wero nearly all of excellent quality, Sir Kirkland's Berkshire ■ sow and Mr Moynihan's sow and litter especially calling forth commendation from tho judge. The. entries in farm produce wero not nearly So numerous as usual. Miss H. Pligh carried all before her in the butler, a.nd Mrs Ballitigall's homo-mode bread was reckoned by tlio judge to to about one of tlio liest exhibits that he was called to adjudicate upon. The . field roots on tho whole were not as numerous as they should, have been, tho best being undoubtedly the potatoes, the majority of which were excellent specimens. Tlie entries for poultry were neither very numerous nor particularly good, but an exception must bo mado of the turkeys. The Singer Sewing Machine Company had a tent on tho ground under tho charge of Mr MneSymon, ils local agent, exhibiting the different styles of its well-known lriachincrs; also some very attructivo pictures and fancy work executed on tho company's ordinary family machine. There were no implements exhibited, but Messrs Ilordern and White had a good display of vehicles. ' One of tho most noticeitblo was a gig built to order for Mr Moynihan. It had mail patent axles, and steel tyres overlapped to protect tho rims. Another two-wheeler was well set tip on Dennet springs, Sarvcm patent wheels, with half-round tyres; the seat boing neatly finished with turned spindles, and has elbow vests trimmed in claret-coloured leather', and painted bronze-green, with carmine fine lines. The same firm also showed a nice gig. Messrs W. E Reynolds and Co. exhibited samples of their Keston vehicles in the shape of a platform spring cart and a station waggon. These vehicles are specially made in Canada to suit the requirements of this colony,' and look very suitable in all respccta to stand the rough work that might be required from them by the farmers. The high wind oomcwhat marred the intwest in tho, jumping, but the stockmen's race was keenly contested, caused a deal of excitement, am) Mr Docherty well deserved his win. Appended is tho prize list-: —
