WATER SUPPLY FOR NORTHEAST VALLEY.
— DEFEAT OF THE LOAN PROPOSAL. A poll was taken of the North-East Valley liorough ratepayers yesterday on a proposal of tho Borough Council to "raiso a special loan of £13,000 for tlio purpose of a water supply for the borough, and tho purchase of land, the 6um necessary for land purchase being £2350, and for reticulation and waterworks £10,450, and a sum not exceeding £200 for surveys and'other pre. liniiuarv expenses. There was not a greatdeal of interest taken in the polling, and only about one-third of those entitled to exercise a vote went to the booths. The hours of polling were from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., and the polling place's were the Salvation Army Barracks and the To\Vn Hall. IV voting was as follows: — Against, tho proposal 223 For the proposal ... 101 Majority against, 122. The proposal was therefore lost,
