WEST HARBOUR BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of the West Harbour Borough Council was held last evening, and attended by Crs Larnaeh (in tho chair), Smith, Duncan, George, Winton, Curie, Jack, and Pryde. An apology was received from the Major (Mr P. G. Cray), who was at Christchurch. Mr Bolton, who was out of town, was. j also apologised for. I Tho Chief Postmaster, Dunedin, wrote noti--1 fving that arrangements had been mado for an extension of the letter-carrier's delivery at Ravensboiirno to include the residences of Messrs M'Culloch, De Lacy, Cameron, Page, Bolton, and Hall; tho extended delivery to liavo effcct on an early date.—Received. j The' Town Clerk, Dunedin, wrote acknowledging rcceipt of the letter from the council in ' reference to the introduction of electric tramways and lighting into the Borough of West Harbour. The letter was placed before the Dunedin City Council at its last meeting and referred to tho Tramways Committee to report. —Cr Smith said tho matter had never come before tho council.—Received. D. A. Hughes wrote asking that something I be done to the road across the hand-railing.— Received; letter to lio over for futuro consideration. The Secretary of the Charitable Aid Board, Dunedin, wrote asking tho council to remit £12 12s 9d due on charitable aid and £1 5s Gd on hospital account.—Received. The Town Clerk, Dunedin, wrote requesting a settlement of tho account due for rent-.— Receivedi. Tho Chief Engineer, Department of Roads, Wellington, wrote stating that a voucher for £72 10s had been passed for payment, and a chequo would be forwarded in a few days. A further sum of £77 10s was available, and on tho council's application, when tho work was done to the satisfaction of the district road engineer, ho would certify and forward the ' claim, which would bo promptly dealt with.— Received. The report of the Inspector detailed the I work done by the surfacemen during the month. —Received. The Finance Committee reported that £66 16s 3d had been paid into the hank since the last meeting, and that all accounts passed had' been paid. Accounts amounting to £26 lis 2d wero recommended for payment. The bank overdraft was £556 12s 10d, the statutory overdraft being £616,—Received and adopted; accounts recommended for payment when, funds available. Cr George moved, as a recommendation to the Harbour Board—"That this council recommends the board to consider the advisability of licensing boats and yachts, and to see that all boats, yachts particularly,, have lifesaving apparatus on board, and that they are inspected."—Several of tho councillors spoke of the desirability of something being done in this direction.—The motion was carried with one dissentient voice. Sevoral notices of motion by Mr Cray were left over in tho meantime. It was resolved—" That the estimate of receipts and expenditure for the year ending March 31, 1906, be approved." Messrs J. P. Arnold, M.H.R., A. Sligo, and , D. R. Eunson waited on tho council as a deputation from the Dunedin Technical Classes
Association.—Mr Sligo, in asking for a contribution towards the funds of the association, said the classes had been growing of late years, and tho present accommodation was altogether insufficient. It would bo for the council to say i( it could grant anything towards tho fnnd3 ot tho association, and, if it could, how much, lie need not enlarge on the benefit the classes had been; but ho would point out that last year tht-y had 31 students from that borough, and of that number about 10 had free railway passes on account of the fact that they had obtained scholarships. Then there was £80 spent amongst the residents of West Harbour in salaries, etc.—Mr Arnoldisaid it was impossiblo at tho present time for the association to go to the public and get the money from them by y/ay of subscription. The association for many years ran tho school entiroly upon public subscription ; it received a grant from-tho Government miflicient to meet tho ordinary working expenses. The association bad opened its doors wider now, und it had an increased number o( pupil*, the money it was trying to nim was to erect a suitable building. Somo hundreds ot pounds' worth of machinery had to be stored in the yard for some timo on account of want of room. The Government ha/1 trljated the aasociation most liberally.
