PICNICS AND SPORTS.
The Dunedin Engineering and Steel Com*
pany, Limited (late Stevenson and Stevenson), held their first annua! picnic at Henley on Saturday in Mr IPKe-gg's grounds. Tho weather was perfect, ami fully 150 persons were present, inchuling Messrs John. Stevensoil, W. W.ilkinson, R. Collon, J. Douglas, and Mrs T. Stevenson ant- family. Mr M'Kegg ran a special trip to the'Taieri Mouth, leaving Henley at 10.30 a.m., and returning again at 2 p.m. This wac liberally patronised, and was thoroughly enjoyed—in fact, it Was a lovely trip, the scenery being beautiful, while the cool breeze lessened the heat. Some valuable prizes were presented: by the firm, and a good sports programme was gone through, while the children wero wcjl looked after with toys and lemonade and' other dainties. Th: Shop Handicap was a spiendid race, all the competitors being bunched together on tho tape. The Married Men's Race proved - equally ' exciting. i'he winner ran s well-judged race, just winning on the post. Hie following had charge of all the arrangements, and looked after everything in a very - satisfactory manner: J. Midgley, J .Adair, T. Veitcli, T. Vandy, D. Henderson, 0. M'Kimion, G. Middleditch, A. Colston, P. Know'.e, J. Gault, and A. E. Fish (secretary). Tho'sports resulted as follow:— Apprentices Race.—W. Johnstono 1, Douglas 2, W. Richardson 3.' Boys' Race—R. M'Cliiitock 1, W, Botton 2. Girls' Race.—S. M'Clintock 1, M.' Steven--son 2, S. Co'.slou 3. Young Ladies' Race.—Miss Henderson 1, Miss Adair 2. Shop Handicap.—J. Wheeler 1, A. Cowie 2, R. Paton 3. Obstacle Race.—C'. Kellott 1. T. Blunuen 2. Married Men's Race.—J. Stevenson 1, A. Colston 2, J. Midgley y. A splendid race, Mr Stevenson winning iiy a bare yard. Cairney ran veil .for half the jouniev, and Vcitch (the favourite) ieil when in a good position. Married Indies' Race.—Mrs Tandy 1, Mrs Adair 2. Mrs Burns 3. , Three-logged:: Race.—W. Thom and W. Brown 1. r Thread and JJeedlo Race.—Miss Cairney 1, Miss Walker 2. Swimming Race.—Shearer 1, Buchanan 2. J. Adair, an old Scottish champion, competed; and showed some of his old form, but tbo handicap was too liniclvfor him to make up. The annual picnic of the Roslyn Methodist Sunday School 'was held in Mr Bunting's paddock at Halfway Bush on Saturday last. A most enjoyable afternoon was spent by a large number of scholars and parents, the weather being all that could be desired. Races for the children were eagerly contested, toys and fruit being provided in abundance, as well as other eatables. The opinion of scholars and teachers was that this was ono of the most successful picnics ever held by the school.
