SCHOOL COMMISSIONERS
The monthly 'meeting of the School Commissioners of Otago was held on Monday, picsent—Messrs D. Barron (chairman), T. Mac(libbon, W. Dallas, 1). "Borne, and the Hon. A. Baldey. A report was presented by Messrs Dallas and Borne on sections at W'ftitahuna West (part Greenfield Estate), with recommendation regarding exchange.—Approved. The Commissioners considered the question as (o tlie advisability of making orchards, plantations, and gnuss a subject of valuation at the end of lease, and of obtaining power to grant renewals without submitting leases to auction. An.opinion from Messrs Mondv, Sim, and Stephens was;lead on the latter point.—Consideration adjourned. The ranger and Mr Mac Gibbon reported on the proposed subdivision of sections 23 and 30, block XYI, Town of Gore.—Report adopted. The ranger and Mr Mac Gibbon reported having inspected Mi A. Gall's reserve at Tulursu in connection with proposed drainage, and stated that tenders had been invited for the work.—Report adopted. . The ranger reported having'arranged with, all the tenants in the Wendon district, except J. A. Milne, lessee of sections 2 and 3, block XII, Wendon, and recommended that tbo leases bs offered as soon as possiblo. He also recommended that unless G. Wood gave a satisfactory explanation regarding the breach of his lease his valuation bs cut'down to £169 10s.—Consideration adjourned. The ranger recommended that the following tenants receive notice to clean gorse and gorse hedges on their sections—viz.: —G. B. Webb, J. Hollowav. A. Coulling, 3?.' Gavey, all of Clifton, and Ja«. Thomson, A. Gerrard, ■Tane Lea, K. Lewis, and W. Malcolm, Winton Hundred; also David M'Callnm, New Kivcr. He also reported on the condition oi Mrs Andrew's section 35, Oreti Hundred; and suggested' t-hat the leases of section 12 block 11. end section I), block 111. East Winton, held respectively by J. W. Mawer and .T. Evan, be cancelled.— lienor! adopted, the secretary stating that lie had served notices on I he tenants referred to. The Engineer of the Wailaki County Council asked for authority to take gravel from a pit in block IV. Papakaio.—Consent granted, subject to erection of a gate, etc., a royalty of 3d per load lo be charged. E. C. Smith, solicitor, Gore, forwarded a declaration of loss of lease of section 21. block IV, Wendonside, by ."lohn Gerken, and asking the commissioners to issue a new lease direct In Win. Gerken.—Copy of old lease to be issued. F. Dntliio, agent for Messrs Smith, lessees of section 20. block IV. section 4. block Y..and sections "i 7 and 78. block 111. Wailaliuna West, applied to surrender lease of same.—Surrender accepted as, from 31st March. .Tas. Beattie. lessee of section GT, block XVI, Town of Gore, applied for permission lo sublet part of the same to J. Dnncan.— Granted. The Southland agent forwarded leases for execution, and stated that it was neceseary to have the survey line between sections 53 and 59, block I, Mataura Hundred, established. Losses to be executed. The Southland agent forwarded a letter from the agent for the Public Trustee at Invercargill in reference to the issue of a lease of section G9. block I. and sections 8, 9, and 10, block 111. Waikaia district, in place of the one which has been lost.—Copy of the old lease to bs issued. Tile ranger asked for instructions regarding payment of 10s per chain valuation to tenants at- Clifton on account of protective bmk on sections in block XIX, Invercargill Hundred. —The commissioners could not see their way to srant compensation. .Tas, White, lessee of section 12. block 111, Wendon district, asked to be allowed valuation for road-making and ditching.—Consideration adjourned. Notice was received from the Department of Agriculture to destroy noxious weeds on vacant sections at Luuisden.—Left in Hie hands of the ranger to attend to.
