EDUCATIONAL STATISTICS.

The quarterly returns of attendanoo for the period ended December 31, 1:104, whiolv have been compiled by the secretary of tho Education Board, show that there were 220 schools in operation in this district, employing 198 male and 317 female teachers. The number of pupils on the roll at the beginning of the quarter was 19,252, and at tho end of the quarter 19,372, comprising 9953 boys and 9419 girls. The averago attendance was 9080 boys arid 8434 girls, making a total of 17,514—being 349 more than tho total for the previous quarter, and 134 more than that for tho December quarter of 1903. Tho number of pupils admitted during the quarter was:— Bojsb, 575; girls, 606;— total, 1181.

,'fhe average attendance fnr'the year 1904 was 17,397, an increase of 163 on that of tho previous year. Thi averago at.the city and suburban schools for the December quarter were:—Kaikorai, 671; Albany Street, b.. • Forbury, 588; George Street, 56?;. High Street, 533; Union Street, 516; Cavcrsham, 515; Arthur Street, 504; North-East Valley, 452; Normal, 419; Momington, 412; Kensington, 270; Ravensbouriie, 167; Anderson's Bay, 127; St. Clair,-123; Wakari, 87; Leitlr Valley, 39. The averages at Oamaru were:—South School, 321; North, 296; Middle, 264. At tho District High Schools: Port Chalmers, 409; Lawrence, 283; Ea!cliitha, 282; Mosgiel, 256; Tokomairiro, 222; Palmerston,- 206; Tapanui, 175; Naseby, 152; Hampden, 111.
