OTAGO RIFLE ASSOCIATION.

LAST DAY.—SATURDAY. This year's meeting of t-ho Otago Rifle Association was concluded' at the Pclichet Bay ranee on Saturday. The weather, as on previous days, was beautiful, ami the 1905 mooting will go down to history as one held under meteorological conditions unsurpassed probably by any previous year's prize firing. In the morning tho Last Try Match and the Cover Match were firod. There were 28' entries for the Last Try and 44 for the Cover Match, I>tit the scoring in neither match produced anything that might be called exceptional. Lieutenant Wolsl-enholme acted as range officer in' the first match, and Lieutenant Ussher and Sergeant-major Taylor supervised the Cover Jlatcli. In tho afternoon three matches were lived, these being the Cadet Match, tho Nursery Match, and the firing for tho Ladies' Challenge Shield.. The weather was not quite so favourable for shooting as in iho morning, the sun early in tho afternoon beating dcuvn very fiercely. A slight breeze which sprang up later on made things a little more comfortable for the competitors, but it also hclocd to make tho shooting a trifle more difficult. In the Cadet Match only 18 entered, the competitors all coming from tho Dunedin High School Cadets and tho Dunedin Engineer Cadets. Twenty-one prizes were offered, but in view of the small, number of entries this number will bo rcduccd by the council at a meeting to bo held this (Monday) evening. Lieutenant Ussher acted' as officer in this match, and Captain Proudfoot- acted similarly in the Nursery Match. The greatest interest, of course, centred in tho firing for tho Ladies' Challenge Shield The new arrangement of the teams all firing in the afternoon had the result of concentrating the interest as well as the competitors, and rendering the ran go very busy looking. Nine teams entered, and the Ihreo leading ones at the conclusion of the shooting at 200 yards were: Dilncdin Navals, first; Kaitangata. second; and Port Chalmers, third. The shooting i|t tho 500 ■yards range saw the country team move li)) into first place, the Port Chalmers into the second, with tho Dunedin Navals third. Tho leading teams were very close, and the exciting finish expected took place. The shooting at the fiOO yards found out the weak spots in a great ninny of the competitors. One possible, however, was made at, the distance, this being by Private I'ottor, of tho North Dunedm Rifles. The shooting at this range had the result of sending the Kaitangata team down and bringing up that of the Dunedin Navals. The question of whether the Dunedin Navals would boat their Port Chalmers confreres for the shield at tho end rested on the last two Shots to be fired' by the firsinained team. Two " billls" wore required to win, and those present gathered round Petty-officer AVoollett, upon whom had devolved iho task of making them. WoolIctt's third last shot was an outer, but liis judgment and nerve did not fail at the crucial moment, and the two coveted "bulls" wero scoured amid great excitement, and the Dunedin Navals won the shield. At the close of the shooting Lieutenant-colonel Smith, who acted as range officer, congratulated tho Dunedin Ne.vals team on its success, and specially complimented P.O. Woollett for the nerve lie had disnlnyed at a pinch. He bad never seen so close a competition for the shield before. Cheers were then given for tho winners of Hie shield, and also for P.O. Wonllett. The meeting then cntne to a close, tho time' being 7.15. Lieutenant M'Lean. it should be mentioned, acted as secretary to the meeting, which, except in respect of tho small number of entries, parsed off very successfully. The following are tho scores;— LAST. TOY MATCH. Conditions: Ten shots at S()0 yards. Open to anyone wlio had fired in feur'mntr-hf-- dwing the meeting, but had not won ever 103. Score.
