Captain Doddswas then seen,-and was told that tho present arrangements were unsuitable and would not be allowed, although that had been the custom for years, 'Ilie inspector then suggested that tho hole bc»filled up with ashes, which was done, and he would provide six sanitary pans, they paying the cost of emptying same. This was agreed to. Tho sanitary contractor was then notified to that efFcc-t, arid (Juring the tune tho men were 111 camp the pans were emptied, twice, and once_ when the eamp broke up. The whole trouble arose by UlO visit of n.ll inspector from Dunedin, who found tit© pans rather full: but- even if they were full, a fow shovelfuls of earth nut- around tihem was atl that was necessary. I put tho question to the sanitary contractor as to the state tho pans were in when renewing them, and he had 110 complaint to make in that ease. The inspector visited' tho latrines several times when tho men were in camn, .and found the pans on the outside free from excreta, and the place generally was clean." The Sanitary Committee "trusts that this matter may bo brought before the council so that, publicity may bo given chat, so far as the Mussel Bay camp was concerned, the sanitary arrangements- were such that 110 reasonable complaint could lie entertained."
