POLICE RAIDS IN THE CITY.

THREE PLACES SEARCHED.

Quito an cxciting time was spent on Saturday night by a detachment of polieo detailed for the special duty of raiding suspected premises in the city in search of intoxicating liquors, and "quite a stock of various delectable fluids was laid in at tho' City Police Station by midnight, at least enough- bottles to supply a small American bar.

Between 9.30 and 10 o'clock, in a quiet, unobtrusive, and sort of you-won't-mind-my-coming-in manner, Sergeant. Ryan and Con-, stables M'lntyre, tlak', and Marshall entered tho premises in Itattray street known as the Trocaderc, formerly Court's Olago Hotel, occupied by Lawrence Clancy, and they discovered therein a small quantity of liquor, together with u largo number of small empty _ bottles. Tho empty bottles wore found in a cellar, premises which the officers of tho law found some considerable diftioulty in reaching, the landlord stating that the key was no nearer than the Norch-East Valley. It _ was found, however, that an entrance conic? bo effected otherwise than by tho use of th« key, with tho result stated. About .the samo time Jlra St-entiford's accommodation house in llaclaggan street, tho late Club Hotel, was raided by Sergeant Lyons and Constables Moses, I'aird, and Hodgson. A search was made, and the polico -suecccdod in finding some liquor, although not in large quantity, in various parts of the l.ouso. A man who represented himself as a lodger claimed one of the lots of liquor as his property, assuring" tho sergeant that one of the constables had wen bim (tho lodger) take tho liquor to tho house. Tho sergeant, however, was not satisfied, and, after inquiry, took that consignment also under his wing. Somo time about 10 o'clock Constable Power, of Moruington, accompanied by Constables Qowtio and M'Holn entered' Golder's Hotel, at Mornington, which house lost its liconso as tho result of the last reduction vote, and they discovered therein somo quantities of laager beer, stout, wine, and a small quantity of whisky, and tee consignments were a'i6o conveyed to the Police Station.

Charges_of sly grog-selling will bo preferred against the persons in whose, possession tho liquor was discovered, and, it is understood, also against a few others whose premises were not raided on Saturday nigft. A summons has boon issued against- Lawrence Clanoy, of tho TrocacX-ro, to answer at least one charge before the City Police Court tomorrow.
