ANGLICAN SYNOD

The Synod of the Dioreso of Dimedin met at St. Paul's Schoolroom 011 lOtli Novenitar. Minder, W. G. Lawless, ami A. A. Finch. The President delivered his opening address, which was largely devoted to tlio domestic affairs of the diccose since the last meeting. The Rev. H. Jones was elected clerical secretary, Dr .Marshall lay secretary, and Mr C. C. Graham chairman of committees. A draft, circular was distributed with respect, to the new Cathedral, being addressed to the members of the Anglican Communion of the Diocese of Dunedin and sympathisers in the building of an Anglican Cathedral. The circular set. out that under the will of the lale Mr William Harrop a sum of money, estimaied at the present time to be worth £29,000, had been bequeathed for the erection of a cathedral in Dunedin, conditionally 011 the sunt of £20,000 being otherwise raised within 20 years. After dilating on the greatness of the opportunity, and the need for strenuous offort, tho circular went on to state that it was desired to raise £10,000 within the next three years, and appealed strongly for support accordingly. Members were asked to become 0110 of 1200 subscribers under various heads:—2oo subscribers were wanted to give lOd a month, or 10s a year; 200 to give Is 8d a month, or 20s a year; 200 to give 2s 6d a month, or 30s a year; 200 to give 5s a month, or 60s a year; 200 to give 8s 4d a month, or 100s a year; 200 to give 10s a month, or '£6 a year; the period to extend over three years ill all cms, and amounts to be paid monthly, quarterly,' half-yearly, or yearly. The circular also stated that from those who felt they could not pome under the above heads or give definite promise tho smallest sums would be'receiycd, It was considered that such a unique event as tiie building of a cathedral should be niarked in sonic permanent way, and, in order to do this, and keep correct and official records which might be preserved, a register would be made. This would contajn all particulars as to the cathedral, and in addition to other names, the names of all subscribers and collectors to the building fund of 20s and over. Tho register,' with the other important documents of the cathedral, would bo handed down to posterity. A motion was carried appointing'a committee to consider the possible extension of tho work of lay readers; also, a motion congratulating the president on having been appointed Primate-of the Church in New Zealand. Tlio report of the Board of Missions showed that £486 18s 5d had been raised during the- year for missionary purposes, exclusive of St. Matthew's Church. Tho ' Diocesan • Treasurer's report stated that the income from all sources for the G.C.- Fund was £754 19s lid. The income for the Bishopric Endowment Fund was £544 2s sd, anil £500 had been paid to the Bishop, It was 'resolved-r-." That thi3 Synod recognises with satisfaction arid thankfulness the efforts of those who are working in the cause of temperanoe to eliminate the element pf private profit from the sale pf liquor." Mr C. IT. Statham njnved, antj Dean Fitchetfe seconded—"That -the Synod wishes to place on record its sincere appreciation of the valuable sorvices rendered to the Church in thjs city and dioeese' by the late Rev. E. G. Edwards, formerly Archdeacon of Dunedin, : and that a letter oi sympathy be forwarded to Mrs Edwards embodying;this resolution." In connection with the Synod meeting a diocesan fostival was held on the evening: of the 14th inst., and was largely attended Tha Primato presided, and with satisfaction to tho extinction of the debt oil tho cathedral, for which he desired to thank Archdeacon Robinson and tho Ladies' Guild and othore who had assisted. Dean Fiichott congratulated tho cathedral congregation on having paid off £3000 nearly in threo years. Ho also referred to tho proposed new cathedral, and said a scheme was being put forward for raising £10,000 of the necessary money within tho next threo years, and then, with that achieved, aa lie had confidence it must bo, after competitive designs from architects of repute hnd been considered, no doubt they would be able to lay the foundation stono.
