INFANT LIFE PROTECTION, &o.
TO THE EDITOR. Sin,—To return to midwifery—which j 3 rather a large contract, oven for the Hon. Mr Seddon, —I could fill several pages of your paper on my personal experience. X havo had much insight on " diplomary " and the good old-fashioned midwife. Many of thoM so-called trained women have more deaths at their door than the kindly-natural and oxpcri&uxxl mother. At the same time I hope slr Seddon will do something for tbo poor and needy mothers; but I am afraid it, like our Education Act, will havo its drawbacks. By all means let liirn have women inspectors trained as nurs&?. Thwo aro many hundreds of poor widows who would be glad of euch a position, and who, by their own experience as mothers and their own moral living, aro qualified for such. Australia must bo the fools' paradise. Tho birth rato must bo increased by any sacrifice. At their .Royal Commission w*e eee.an old maid giving her evidence. Now, Sir, in tho name of ( common sense, what can an old maid understand about such things? But unfortunately such women aro put only too often into positions whoro skilled mothers should bo, and who only can understand 'family wants and mothers' troubles. With your permission I shall have something to My oil nursing in another letter.—l am, etc., H. M'D.
