ROWING.

Br ISi'iiOKK. It is reported on good authority that the winner ot the forthcoming Towns-Tressider race for ths world's cho-mpionshij) will Ire challenged, as soon as the race is over, by James (Stunsbury, the ex-champion seullor, who is said to have a lot- of good backers. In twining for the match, Tressider will havo the assistance of Chris. Meilsoi), and irill row in one of his boats, Tho long-ponding sculling match between George. Towns, champion of the world, and Richard Tresidder, for the- title held by the former, has at last been lixed up. After a long discussion of terms it was finally settled that tho match shall bo rowed on the Parraniatta championship course, Sydney, on July 30, for £1000, each sculler contributing half that amount. Tresidder, who beat H. Fearco last year, had difficulty in getting his surplus flesh off in time for tho race, and, fearing the samo difficulty again, pressed for longer timo. Towns, as holder of tho championship, has tho privilege of dictating to a great extent the terms on which ho shall race, and insisted on their meeting boing on July 30. Tresiddor was very anxious for a match, and gave way on this point. Another condition Towns imposed 'was that in the event of his being defeated in the race 75 per cent, of tho revenue derived from the steamers shall go to him, and tho balance to Tresidder, and, if he is successful, that they shall share the "gate" equally. His reason for ■urging this was that he had been to great oxpenso of time and trouble- in going in pursuit of the title to America, and that ho was entitled to recoup himself as much as possible tho expenses ho had incurred. This, after some demur, was also accepted by Tresiddor. Tho articles which were signed to bind tho match name Mr Pitzhardingo as judge, and William Beach, exchampion of tho world, as umpire. The race between Towns and Tresidder will bo watched with great interest. The scullers both belong to the Neweastlo district, and while- Georgo Towns has been round tho world, scoring victories in England and America; Tresidder has been 'making good progress on Australian waters. It will have, been mora than 12 years since a sculling race for the championship of tho world was held on tho Parramatta whon Towns arid Tresidder nieot. Tho last raw was'when James Stansbury, ex-champion of the world,' defeated T. Sullivan, then of

] New Zealand, but now of the Tlmraos, London. Since then there have boon only three races fo\' tho championship—viz., v.'lion !>tnn=bury beat. C. Harding, of . England, on tic Thames on July 13, 1896; when Jacob Gaudauv beat Stansbury on the same course 011 September 7, 1896;, and when George Towns acquired his present titlo from Gaudaur on tlio Lake of the. Woods, Canada, OS September 7, 1901.
