ELECTIVE EXECUTIVE.
TO THE EDITOR. Sltn.-licfcrring !o Mr Barclay's.letter in your issue of Monday, it is amusing to see a man who considers himself a, democrat eulogising our obsolete system of porty government; and for what reason? Because, forsooth, it has enabled a party in Australia, representing one-third of the House and less than one-third of tho electors of the Commonwealth, to grasp Iho reins of power. It has long since been pointed outhow easy it is for a small but homogeneous party, by holding tho balance of power betweon tho two main' parties, to impose its will on tho majority. This is one of tho inevitable fruits of our absurd party, system. But that tho result, the rule of the minority, should bo exulted in by a professed democrat throws a painful light on the extent to which our politicians (or ex-politicians) adhero to and 1 beliovo in the first principles cither of Liberalism or Democracy.—l am, etc., Dunedin, May 31.
