THE NEW CATHEDRAL.

TO THE EDIIOE. Sin,—l, too, like your correspondent " Presbyterian," was disappointed on reading Mr Howitsou'e letter "on the nibjeot of tho proposed Anglican Cathedral, and I do not think it represents the views of the majority of the Presbyt«ri?jns of the city. I am a loyal Presbyterian myself, but I wolcomo the prospect of the erection of a. stately and commodious olturch, which will be a source of prido to overy citizen and add greatly to tho pleasure and profit of tho members of tho communion more particularly interested when they assemble to worship within its \yalls. I well remember that when subscriptions for tho building of the present Knpx Church were being canvassed, for many members of other denominations gave freely, including , our Anglican friends, and my mito will be forthcoming on the present-occasion.—l am, etc., AXOTIIEB PbESBVTERIAN.

— There is a stretch of railway line in America, on the Lake Shore Railway, which runs 63 miles without a curve.

J IN THE MIDST OF PROHIBITION. I TO TDK EDITOE Sir,—Having just returned from several weeks' travel in tho no-licemo districts, I ehould like to write a few words in answer to your. correspondent, Mr 0. E. Hugo. His first statement—viz,, "That ministers and prohibitionist leaders say there is no drink sold in no-license areas "—is an nbso- ! lute falsehood. lam eorry to be so plain, but no , other word will fit the case. .When tho Lyttelton Times sent its reporters down to Ashburton to inquire into tho results of no-license, tho most serious complaints as to the prevalence of sly grog-soiling wore made by prominent no-liconse advocates. I Others, again, said thero was not much sly grog sold, but no one raid there was iiono at all. Mr Hugo, as a resident, must know this. Therefore, his statement is inexcusable, and seriously weakens the. value of all evidence tendered by him. The remainder of his letter also makes it plain that tho law has been continually broken in he presence; h e has, from ""his own account, evidently been considered a " safe" ' man. I consider that a man who thus condones, if he dow not actually take part in law-breaking, is infinitely less a credit to a community timn Iho despised and muohabused informer. Both are accomplices, but Ine object of the one is to give effect to tho law of the land; the other has not oven this excuse. Mr Hugo stands self-con-demned. Assuming that the incidents he describes really did take place, (hoy. are onkisolated instances, and arc completely over- • mafc-liod in importance- by the mass of evidonce in favour of the good effects of tho iio-licenso law. A man who keeps a livery stable in Gore told mo that it was pitiable in license times to have- tho women constantly coming to him and asking him to go to the hotels and hunt their husbands up. Ihcy had often been waiting hours in the cold, and feared if they loft it any longer their husbands would ho too drunk to drive. Ho said ho lia<l not had any jobs of (his ; kind to do since no-license, and although ; many of tho fanners grumbled they got away home early and sober, and he thought their wives had greater reason to rejoice than laty had to grumble. A woman of Jtivcrsua-le, too, told me (that the farmers now came from Koro without having had any drink at all, and got their horses out of tho stable at once and went straight home. Formerly, having begun to drink a . k G° rc > they kept on at Riversdale, often till 2 or 3 o'clock in the morning. So, said silo, even this district, whioh still has licenses, feels the benefit of no-license in Core.-I am, etc. Oxe Wno Ksows.
