(Received June }, at 8.53 a.m.) General Andre, Minister of War, speaking in the Chamber of Deputies, said that, bo regretted giving bis sanction for the recent soldiers' walking trial, which had been organised by the Matin newspaper. The shade temperature was 80deg, and the only refreshments iced drinks. Eighty men aro ill, mostly from heal; and over-exertion. Some who were in delirium persisted in their attempts to walk, and had to bo forcibly prevented. Thirty-five are in the hospital.

Next clay a sharp fight occurred, the Japanese infantry losing heavily from shrapnel' fire while crossing the valley in close formation. The Cossacks retreated to Siamatsi, in order to avoid being outflanked, losing two officers and seven men.
