STRATFORD, October 20. Bessie Fleming, licensee of the Commercial Hotel, was charged to-day with allowing drunkenness on her premises. 'iho magistrate held that he could not convict unless thero was affirmative and positive proof that accused supplied drink, knowing tho man to l>o drunk.
PAHTATUA, October 20. To-day at the Magistrate's Court a settler was fined 40s and 10s respectively on two charges of storing explosives without a lionise.- The inspector of explosives said he wanted it known that the Government would in future enforce the law in regard to this matter.
CHRISTCJJCUCH, October 20. Tlio Diocesan Synod parsed a motion today that the Standing Committee should be requested to inquire into the mode of letting seats in churohe-s where pew rents obtain, and report to next session of the synod. Bishop Julius said lie hoped to see tho timo when pew rents would be abolished, and other members spoko strongly against tho seat-renting system. It was decided to roeommond the General Synod to support to the utmost of its power tho proposed congress of tho Anglican communion in London in 1903. Mr George Bowron, of Messrs Bowron Bros., was fined £2 this morning for failing to furnieh a return under tho Income Assessment Act. There is unusual mortality amongst lamb.? in tho Sheffield district, and Mr H. C. Wilkio, Government veterinary surgeon, is expected from Bunedin this evening l to inquire into tho matter. About 2500 dozen eggs have been received or are to bo received before tho end of the week to he- graded and stored in the Government cool stores for export.
